Blade / Cavity

Re: Blade / Cavity

I prefer the look of a blade but would never dream of playing with them.

My Ping S59s are a good compromise, I think they would fall into the "players cavity" category as described above. Thin top line with some forgiveness. Great for those of us who don't like chunky clubs but aren't good enough for true blades.

This.

My Black Cats have a pretty shallow cavity and you definitely feel it if you don't strike the ball well so I feel like they're a good comprimise.

Playing with a mate of mine on Saturday who plays off 4 and I believe has upgraded to Blades since I last played him (7 or 8 years ago!), so I might try the odd iron shot with them to see what the crack is.

Re: Blade / Cavity

Blades = Beautifull
Cavity = Ugly

Simple

Ah yes.

But

I've never managed a naked body shuffle rub with Keira Knightley, but I enjoy looking at her.

My good lady, however, is still good looking, and is happy to get down and groovy with me.

On the other hand there are the likes of Heather from Eastenders. You'd have to be either very drunk, or a desperate virgin to consider that particular port in any storm.

Same thing with golf clubs.

There's a point where practicality and looks come together in the perfect package for each individual.

Having ideas above your station will only lead to frustration and loneliness.

But there's no need for most of us to end up with any ugly old tat, just because it's easiest.

Golf = Life

Re: Blade / Cavity

I've only used cavities and need all the help I can get, but, I would love to have a wack with some blades to see how hard they really are!

Re: Blade / Cavity

Having got myself some TM TP's I'm firmly in the "player cavity" camp. There were some tasty golfers at Ascot yesterday, Justoneuk, Easengrace, pieman (I'm sure there are others but they were the ones I saw swinging) and they could play blades (if they don't already) without a problem. Idiots like me wouldn't do them justice and so are better served using whatever gives us the best chance of scoring well. To me (and it's only a personal opinion) its about the quality of the feel both off the middle and off-centre first for me. If I hit it and it flies too high or too low then I'll discard it until I find something that gives me what I'm looking for. Once I have a couple of contenders then I'll look at price, looks etc. The bottom line though is they have to help me get it in the hole asap first and foremost. Perhaps I need to be looking for some big berthas on e-bay

Have you seen the lumps of scrap metal that he uses at the moment? You'd get more feel from a broom handle with a lump of coal stuck on the bottom.

I keep telling him to go out and earn some money to buy some new shinies, but he hits these things well enough to warrant keeping the cash in his back bin.

15 year old Vantage Irons iirc.

:eek:

:cool:

Alternatively, let me splash the cash on some ultra-super-bells-and-whistles-game-improvement irons and see if there really is anything to be gained from playing these type of clubs.

Re: Blade / Cavity

I suppose it depends on why we want to get better at this game. Is it to have a low h'cap, is it to have a chance with blades, or is it to have a low h'cap and keep winning with whatever clubs make life easiest for ourselves?

Fwiw, I did try the MP68's earlier this year, when looking for more realistic clubs, but I just had to try them. (Some that have seen me play will be laughing their socks off right now at the thought of me hitting the 68's!).

I had no problem hitting them, I just couldn't hit the sweetspot often enough. Consequently the distance was a bit too erratic. They were no more slice'y or hook'y than any other club I'd hit. In fact the only definate was, the more game improver the irons got, the more I hooked the ball, (offset perhaps!) Which is why I ended up with the 300's.

There's nowt wrong with using whatever suits your swing / game, whether it's a blade or the ultra ugly TM Burner SuperLauch (Dave's next clubs perhaps!! :p), or even some old battered hand-me-downs.

I'd love to play with the likes of the 68, but not now, and perhaps not ever. Is the reason I play golf to eventually play with blades. Probably not. But I do like to have something half decent looking that enables me to play the game to the best(or perhaps average) of my ability.

In the old days you inherited your clubs from your father, not much changed in design over 20 years and clubs were damn expensive when compared to todays prices. So it made sense. I'd love to give my son a decent set of blades as hand-me-downs, but it's not going to help him at all. So why bother. The only club I would like him to have is my Bettinardi putter. Perhaps he might be able to get it to work inside 4 feet, 'cause I sure as hell can't!

I've rambled.

What was the question again. ;)

Re: Blade / Cavity

I play mp32s so muscle backs really. Honestly I can say I find them easier to hit than my old X12 pros - why I haven't got a scooby but I find them silly easy to hit all the way up to my favourite 2i.

I bought the 32s 2nd hand after trying nearly every set of irons I could get my hands on and to be honest players cavities are far harder to hit with less feedback to boot.

The mp68s are really cake and it eat it clubs but there's no way I'd pay that money for irons NO WAY!

Hit a few shots with the TW Nike blades other night at the range as the guy in the bay next to me was hitting them and again they are silly easy to hit.

I get the idea of SGI irons BUT it's like 460cc drivers to me - it feels harder to swing something the size of a brick at the ball than something just adequately sized.

The biggest difference between the 2 in my opinion is distance consistancy - with a GI/SGI cavity you're miss-hits will go nearly as far as your purely struck shots. With a blade/muscleback your miss-hits won't go nearly as far but if your strike is consistant enough your direction/trajectory control is SO much better.

No chance. Taylor Made have only made one club more beginner-orientated than my Mizunos.
There's quite a few folk waiting for Ralph Maltby to do the MPF rating on the SuperLaunch.

I'm loving my Callaways; I hit a few great shots with them today. I even managed to hook a 6 iron around a tree today....it can be done! :cool:

Shot of the day was my PW straight into the bunker (20+ yards short) on the 16th. My partner looked at me in astonishment. He asked if I'd hit it badly. My reply was "no, spot on mate, 85 yards to go".

It was then I realised I was 15 yards SHORT of the 100 disk, i.e. 115 from the c.o.t.g.

Never done that before!!!! :D :D

Amen. That is the truth.

Re: Blade / Cavity

Well I got my new Titleist MB's last night and headed off for a bit of a thrash with them and I have to say that they feel excellent compared to my old irons and wish I had changes earlier!!!

Re: Blade / Cavity

Good for you. My Pro (got to +2) had just swapped his Titleist blades for some AP irons. Can you both be right?
:rolleyes:
