I was granted a free weekend at short notice (partner had to work). Unfortunately prospective playing partners and tee times were by then both scarce so I took myself off to a previously untried muni, Orton Meadows at Peterboro'.

In my short career in golf I've now played 27 courses and this is one of the best maintained I've found. OK, the greens could maybe be a little truer but this is, I think, due to the longer winter cut.

It's not the longest you will find (it's equally well looked after sister course, Thorpe Wood, is that at 7000 yds), nor is it the most well balanced as the front is a good deal longer than the back, nor is it the most challenging, but if you want a pleasant round in attractive surroundings at a good price (£19.50 at weekends).

It's certainly doing the business, it's got a decent, very well stocked pro-shop, a 12-hole par 3, and the pro's were kept busy (the putting green had a class of juniors on it when I arrived and had still another when I left). Decent adjoining pub, with food at a reasonable price.

Good call on Orton Meadows. Played there and at Thorpe Wood many times and have always come away suitably impressed.

I have posted elsewehere about a society day I played yesterday at Bird Hills in Maidenhead. Surprisingly dry underfoot and the greens were in pretty good knick given recent weather and the amount of traffic that had been over them (huge society in front of ours). Well done to their green staff

I've got a soft spot for Orton Meadows, it was the first course I ever played when I was visiting friends. Second time I went I got my first birdie on that short par 3 over a pond on the back 9, think it's the 14th. Happy Days. :)
