No big hitting on the course today:

I resisted the temptation to lash the shots today and instead played as controlled off the tee as possible.
Max Driver distance was 275.

Disappointment today was the putting - a number of three putts and one four putt. Putting is normally a strong point.

Overall, I'm very happy with this. I know now that I have the power and ball striking to attack the greens, and was only let down by chipping and pitching. For these, the weakness was not in contact, but in judging distance.

Was reading your post earlier and this is impressive. Correct me if I am wrong but you have no handicap at present.

Have you handed in 3 cards and if not when are you expecting to? What handiacp are you hoping to receive?

What does 'mid' mean off the tee? I was thinking 'middle', as in fairway, but some of them have 0 in the fairway column. :D

Looks like the long game's not bad, but need to work on chips and pitches. I'm sure you'll get there. :)

No I don't have a handicap yet - only been playing properly a year (started just after The Masters last year), not counting some minor play in my youth (albeit with the help of Jack Nicklaus VHS tapes), hitting on the school field.

I'm not overly fussed about a handicap as I have no real intention to play in competitions, just aiming to shoot good golf. It's so much nicer playing when you play the course instead of playing your swing. Scratch is my ultimate aim.

This refers to the direction as aimed. Mid means it's started exactly where aimed. Those not on the fairway may will have gone long and run off.

Good shooting, just looking at your stats, and your distances for each club, the thing that jumps out at me is the inconsistency on distance. The key to getting your handicap down[when you get one]is knowing how far you hit each club[when you hit it well]this will help. Also getting rid of the 3+4 putts.Well done.

Tim you should have a handicap to be fair.I understand you aim is scratch,so you will need a handicap, and although you say your not interested in comps yet,you could be open to all aquisations[spelt wrong im sure]down the line when you do finally enter comps.

The putting was doing my head in today - missed a few 3 footers and underhit by half a long putt! Over the last few rounds the putting has been level (no drops) - just a bad day I guess.

Don't forget that the club distances vary with elevation and wind. The 5I 160 was uphill, the 190 was with a breeze. However, I understand your point.

But to be a scratch golfer you need a handicap, and to get a cut in the handicap you need to play in comps,no?

But........... Put in 3 cards, say 12, 11 and 8, you get an 8 h/cap. That's alot of 0.2s away from scratch.

Put in a 2, a 3, and a 1, you're not far off a scratch h/cap.

Maybe delaying getting a h/cap is a cunning plan.

If I had put in consecutive scores over a Jan weekend I'd be off 1. Vanity h/cap, but if they were my 3 cards, Fri, Sat, Sun, that would have been my h/cap.

Can't I just submit three level par cards?

Yes, you can.

Good luck - you'll need it.

There's been many before you and there'll be many after you - all searching for scratch handicap. I've been playing golf for 30 years - I've not met many scratch golfers.

Perhaps have a word with your handicap secretary and ask for a scratch handicap??? Job done then - right???
