I am thinking of moving to another club BUT????

The club I am thinking of moving to is more suited to my game, I enjoy the course and always score well there. It is open for the majority of the year and is 20 minutes away from where I live.

Trouble is with with the club I am a member is that it is closed for 3 months a year in the winter time but I have loads of mates there and is only 3 minutes away from where I live.

I have been a member there for a long time but am worried that the grass is not greener on the other side!!!

What do I do??

Why not ask your mates if any of them fancy a change too?

Most of my mates like the fact that the club is so close to where we live so in the main part of the season forget about the moaning we do when the club is closed in the winter time.

I must admit it really bugs me that our course is closed when I want to play in the winter time and I am paying for it and other courses within 20 minutes are all open on proper greens.

GG,
If you look back at the last 2 or 3 seasons pal the weather from november to the middle and end of january has been abismal both here and across the pond on yer side.....Thats nearly 3 months in any mans language.
So to change because your present course closes for 3 months in the winter i think would be a mistake.....

Why would you want to play golf on rock hared fairways or greens....

The course I am thinking of moving too is close to the coast but is still a parkland course which drains really well and the greens are not rock hard.

If you have played any of the courses in the North Wales coast line you would know that not all are links courses and drain amazingly well and are open for most of the year.

Smiffy is looking for a course that suits his game, it needs 18 dogleg-right holes of no more than 80yds

GG - Get a Grip man !

20 mins away x 2 = 40mins round trip every time you want to play, whether it be a round, or a few holes........

No way would I do that. My course is 2mins away, and I love that I can pop on for 5/6 holes when I have an hour free.

Helloooooo ????

I left my club at the end of 2010 and haven't found a new one yet, I've been accepted at one close by but the joining fee is huge, and the other option I have is a 30 minute drive away. It's the travelling that is really worrying me, I like to be able to pop up for a few holes or some practice so putting an hour onto every trip could be a mistake.

If your course is closed, which would wind me up as well, could you not use the opportunity to play some others in the area ?

I have a choice of two clubs; one 15 mins drive and the other 11 mins drive.

The closer one is 110 a year more expensive. I doubt the extra 1.1 miles a few times a week will cost me £110 over a year as I only spend about £500 on fuel a year anyway as I cycle my commute.

EDIT:

Its about 165 extra miles over a year which at my current fuel prices and my current MPG that is about £20 more.

on a similar train of thought... my eldest has played for the same football team for 8 years (since little league), he is of a decent standard and so left to play in a higher division as he felt it would bring him on more. After half a season he left and went back to his old team as he missed his mates and the banter.

There is nothing better than having good friends/mates for banter and although new friends can be made it is never the same imho. In the 3 mnonths break arrange away days, take a few lessons and plan it into your golfing year then you wont miss the 3 months closed season so much

20 minutes may not sound a lot but it depends on when your driving there. My now old course (I joined Royal Ascot yesterday) is 20 minutes away but in rush hour after work that can be up to 45 minutes. This was one of the reasons I moved, there are others, but I think you need to consider it.

The other thing is, is moving to a course that suits your game and you always score well at a good idea for your game? Maybe it's just easier and if your trying to improve that's not such a great thing.

Also, how are you gonna feel when all your mates are talking about their round when you weren't there?

Finally, all courses shut a lot in winter at the moment. My old course stays open if it's frozen but it's not great playing on frozen greens.

If you ask me, there is no decision, stay where you are.

That's a good point and another one of the reason I left my old club. I had 6 scores between 73 and 75 last year, and I just don't think I'm good enough to score like that, it was giving me a false impression of my game

Back in the middle of 2009 I was looking to join a a club and I narrowed it down to a choice of two.

Club A was 20 minutes drive away and played on the same greens all year round.

Club B was 5 minutes drive and uses winter greens from November to March. All other factors were equal.

As a result I chose Club A.

Come April 1st, which club do you think had the better greens? Club B of course. It took until the middle of May before Club A caught up. I have now moved my membership to club B.

Given that your club closes for 3 months I suspect that you have good quality greens when your season starts.

Rather than move clubs, why not see if there are any coastal clubs near you that offer a winter only membership. These are quite popular up here in Scotland and can work out at good value and give you a change of scenery.

The club I am looking at joining 20 minutes away is coastal and the greens are always in tip top condition all year round and are probably the best greens this area.

The course I am looking to join is Pennant Park in North Wales.

Here is their website http://www.pennant-park.co.uk/

Pennant park is a cracking course and like you say it's always in good nick.

Where do you play now?

If i lived closer i would join Pennant, i love it!

I seem to remember another forumer mentioning that they are a member at Royal Ascot. ;)

Really, who's that then?

It makes sense for me. My old club was a pay & play and one of the busiest in the area. A few years back when I joined I could scoot down about 1730 after work in the summer and get 18 holes in. This year I tried a couple of times and played 3 holes in just over an hour before giving up. Also, I know about 10 guys who I play in a society with who are members there who play every Tuesday and Thursday through the summer and of course I now know Homer. It's 10 mins from my house and an easier drive than my old place and I don't have to book.

It's a no brainer now I can afford it.

The only down side and should have been a discount off his fees is that he'll have to carry me. Rumour has it HTL is thinking about playing again and looking at RA. Great thing with Ascot is that its a roll up members only course so even if you tee off at 6.30pm in the summer it's simple to get 18 holes in. That is one of the problems for pay and play in that everyone wants a time after work so the evenings become as busy as weekends.

I play at Old Padeswood which is only 3 minutes away from where I live and has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years but suffers terribly in the winter time with standing water and cannot guarantee to be open from November to April hence why I am thinking of joining Pennant Park as it is open and on proper greens most of the winter time and always in great condition :)
