Best way to ease into a Golf Club?

Would a newer player be better off joining a poorer, easier club to improve their game at the start or just jump straight in and join a proper tougher club and just learn as you go?

I started off my journey last August borrowing some old clubs from my Dad. After a fair few range sessions, and a change of clubs courtesy of someone at work selling theirs, I had my first round in January this year. I've had 5 other rounds and on Sunday I'm actually going to go along and join up with a club.

Personally I've found that to be a decent way to build up. Perhaps I'd have taken a few months off between picking up clubs and having a round, but by the time I got a swing going it was into winter. I would recommend a few rounds at an easier local muni, maybe have a trial round at some members clubs and really just see where you think you'll fit best. I probably wouldn't go for the hard course straight away though, as you risk losing your enthusiasm playing on a course that your game can't handle.

Well i say Newbie but i've been playing Golf on and off for a few years now but i'm still only 19 and the club im looking to join is meant to be a tough one. I judge my rounds on +/- 90's e.g. If every hole is a 5 you'll shoot 90 and i only manage around 85-95 on a course with no par 5's.

I would say join a club you can get to quickly, easily and frequently that offers plenty of competitions.

I would not worry how tough the course is, if its pretty tricky then when you go to easier courses you will shoot the lights out!

I say pick the place you place golf on more important things than how hard the course is, like is it gererally warming and welcoming and offers value for your money!

I wouldn't get hung up on the toughness of course you should look for a half decent one which is convienient to get to and has friendly and welcoming members and comps you can get a game in. Do a bit of research before signing on the dotted line, also look out for special offers for your age group many clubs are looking to attract members like yourself.

Why pay for a club you aren't entirely happy with. Find a course that represents a fair challenge but also has a good mix of members and you can get a regular game and play in comps and jump in and get involved. I've no doubt you'll improve the more you play the trickier course and enjoy the craic a club gives you

If you can break 90 then you're already better than many players at whatever club you join so don't even factor that into your thinking. As others said - pick the right club for you and get stuck in!

Yeah but this on a course with no par 5's. I think i'll get a buddy to sign me on and give Renfrew a try then decide from there.

Doesn't matter about the difficulty of the course, ask yourself the following:

1) Is the course in good condition?
2) Is the membership cost affordable?
3) Are there plenty of competitions?
4) Is the pro good?
5) If you know anyone who is already a member there, what do they say about the members?
6) Is it far from home?

Difficulty of course shouldn't really be a factor if you ask me.
