As above,

When is the best time to buy new golf gear? I am thinking along the lines of clubs, shoes etc.. It seems that there is a few good bargains to be had on second hand gear at the minute with the likes of ebay and on the forum here..

Do you feel waiting for a sale is a better move? like for example last week direct golf were selling off the dry joys at 65 quid were if you had of got them spring of the year you would have paid 100 quid.

Be interested to get everyone take on this..

Thanks

Usually at the start of the season when manufacturers release their new models (or next week if you want a TM driver). That way you get the choice of brand new shiny kit or some good deals on current models as they make space for the newer arrivals

I think to be honest now isnt a bad time to buy,

alot of people havent accounted for how bad that ash cloud screwed stuff. Imports being held back due to logistics meaning where they were shipped late and following pre planned deliveries followed instantly meaning alot of overstocked shops. Alot of people go stuck on holiday spending more than they could afford meaning spend in most non essential sectors is well down.

alot of jobs and budget cuts have forced people to tighten on their spending so retail spend is down again..

if you buy wise you can have some real good deals, dont be scared to push for the deal either.

around 6 weeks ago we was after a small LCD for one of the bedrooms, i walked out of comet with a £300 samsung for £225, you can haggle if you have the balls.

I tend to find the best prices in the winter, especially with second hand gear as people are just not buying as much out of season.

I have found that just the best deals on balls are normally around just after xmas, 2 years in a row I have found 3 dozen Wilson balls for 25 quid.

Aside from that, as long as you are not after a recent model then there are bargains to be had most of the year round.

I think Spring/Summer is the best time to buy new clubs, especially drivers or putters.
With the onset of the warmer days, the air is much, much thinner so if you lob one 'cos it ain't working properly it goes a proper long way.
Nothing worse than throwing a new driver towards a lake during Autumn/Winter and it comes up short.

Would you throw a provisional club just in case it you dont find it??

I look at this slightly differently.

For clubs I think the best time to change is at the end of the season, October\November time.

Last year I changed too many clubs mid-season and it played havok with my game. Swapped my driver, hit it great when fitted but killed my scores for 2 months as I was so inconsistent with it.

If you go end of season for the change you have all winter to work out any problems and get used to the change.

if you're looking for new you have to go for just before the main stock changeover periods, pre-season, pre-christmas.

if you're looking for second-hand then primarily post-season but otherwise shortly after new stock is shelved.

if the economy remains as expected, sales throughout the year

Slightly off topic but im going to america in september is it cheaper there am I better waiting till I go??

If you buy new gear out there Connor you could be lumped for import tax and VAT when you come back through customs.
Best bet is to take your clubs with you but leave a few empty slots in your golf bag for new driver, putter that sort of thing and make sure you get them dirty before you put them back in over there
;)

I was in Florida this spring and clubs were no cheaper there than here. A lot depends on the exchange rate and beware, customs are getting wise to folk buying abroad.
I would personally buy here and get custom fitted.
