Yesterday I played an introductory round at Gog Magog, as part of my membership application. Played the Old Course with the incoming captain, who is acting as my joining sponsor.
A little nervous, arrived at the course about 40 mins before the arranged meet time, had a look round the pro shop and hit a few putts on the practice green.
Teed off at 12 o'clock, first few holes were fairly uneventful, nothing too damaging and 4 bogeys. Pars came at 5 and 6 , before a tee shot OB and a three putt meant I dropped 4 shots on the next two holes. A par at 9 gave me a front nine of 43, (par 35) and level par with my handicap.(16)
something happened around the turn and I started to hit the ball much more solidly, finding fairways and greens. Back nine consisted of 2 birdies, 3 bogeys, a double bogey, and 3 pars for a 38 back nine and a total of 81. (Par 70)
The eighteenth hole was unbelievable, pulled my tee shot into the bushes, hit a provisional down the middle, couldn't find the first one, then holed a 5 iron from 170 yards for a 4
finished at quarter past 3, despite being held up a bit on the last 4 holes by a four ball in front.
the course was in unbelievably good nick, the greens were true and really quick for this time of year. Dread to think how quick they will be in the summer....... The ground was dry and there were no boggy areas, even in the rough and the areas with heavy footfall.
Met a few members in the bar afterwards, seemed like a friendly enough bunch, the club apparently has a bit of a rep for being a bit snooty, but I have to say that everyone I've met so far has been fine.
so my best round since I started playing regularly again last august, (probably in my top 5 scores ever), on a course I've never played before, and some really good golf played.
to top it off, from some comments that were made yesterday, it sounds like there's a chance I might get my membership in April, rather than having to wait until October, so fingers crossed.
