Best replacement for an immersion heater?

If it retails for £1300 he will only be paying £1000 max from the wholesaler.

I think you need another quote. The guy you are dealing with may have a lot of work on and is just bumping his prices up thinking he doesn’t really want the job but if he can get £12/1300 a day it would be too good to turn down.
That may be applicable in the electrical game but certainly not Plumbing.

The price of boilers/cylinders on the net is what we pay over the counter. On some occasions we may save £30-50 but thats rare.

The merchants profit margin on boilers/cylinders varies between £10-30.

I always get 3 quotes. That will give you a idea if you're being ripped.

yes, will get another couple of quotes once the holidays are out of the way.

Don't forget the disposal costs of the old unit. Trades can't just drop it in a bin and walk away, and the fines for illegal disposal can be many £1000's.

Fair enough, maybe the plumbing wholesale trade is not as cut throat as the electrical one. I see Vent Axia fans on-line that are nearly £300 that I pay £99 for. Almost every accessory I see at Screwfix is cheaper through my wholesaler. Thought it was the same for the Plumbs.
