Best day to visit the Open

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on when is the best day to visit the Open? Was thinking of going to one of the practice days as tickets are cheaper etc and thought it might be less crowded! Anyone got any experience on which practice day is the best? And how does it compare to one of the actual tournament days?

There is no comparison between practice and tournament days. By their very name you get to see the pros under no pressure during the practice days whereas they are very much focussed in on the tournament days.
Personally, having been to several Opens, I find Saturday and Sunday the best and will be doing both again this year. This is when the competition really begins, the jockeying for position is over and the blast for the line starts.

Never been myself but think I'd choose Thursday or Friday to guarantee seeing my favourite player

If you have a favourite, go Thurs or Fri. Otherwise, Sat & Sun are quiet by comparison. We've been doing Thurs & Sun for a number of years.

I am going last practice day and Thursday.

I tend to go to the practice day when there is far more room to move about and watch the pros and watch the event on TV. If I had to go I'd go on the first two days when play lasts longer and you can follow more groups

I went every day one year and figured it really depends what you want to see!

If it's a particular player, then Practice or Thursday/Friday - and as others have posted, the attitude is rather different!
If it's the pressure, then watch it Sunday on TV! The crowding can be very frustrating!

Played the course (not of their tees though) a couple of days after too!

I'm going to St. Andrews Saturday and Sunday. I think I went on the Friday in 2010.
