Best Cover Version

There's 2 ways to do a cover...
1. A straight "copy"
2. A complete reworking keeping elements of the original.
P.us they have to be Live...you can do anything with a studio and a million tracks and overdubs

Personal choice here but both have been done by my current faves The Warning - 3 sisters from Mexico aged 20, 22 and 24 when these were recorded 18 months to 2 years ago..
1. The straight copy

2. The Rework..
I prefer covers that are not a straight copy.

Anyway, love The Warning too (got to see them in Nottingham 18 months ago, although they didn't play Enter Sandman).

There are are many many great cover versions, and no doubt I'll later remember other great ones, but I particularly like

The Stranglers - Walk on By
Fine Young Cannibals - Ever Fallen In Love
Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind
Status Quo - Roadhouse Blues

I asked Mrs V for her favourite cover version and she came up with Corlea Botha and Amira Willighagen performing Flower Duet from Lakme.
Amira was 13 years old at the time.
Made Mrs V tear-up the first time she saw and heard this.

On the back of this thread, I've been listening to a playlist called "100 Best Covers of all Time" on Spotify. My gawd, there are some awful versions on it ... (Because the Night - Bruce Springsteen, and Perfect Day - Duran Duran stand out in this respect).

But a few gems also ( Pround Mary - Tina Turner, and Can't Get No Satisfaction - Devo) to name but two.

Bruce doing a "cover" of his own song?

Kind of...
Although BS wrote and recorded it a couple of months before Patti Smith did, his version has only appeared on Live albums released some years later..
A similar thing happened with Rick Derringer and his song Rock'n'Roll Hoochie Coo....originally recorded when he was with the Edgar Winter Group but recorded when he left the band and started solo...

On a similar vein, I doubt Jeff Beck's "Hi Ho Silver Lining" ever appears on a "best cover" list, but it is a cover.
A group called "The Attack" released their version a few days before Jeff Beck's one.

Ok.

However, given it was written by Springsteen and Patti Smith , then Springsteen didnt have a clue, and Patti Smith knocked the spots off it ...
It was one of a few songs that Springsteen gave to others when they did not make it from his 1977/78 recordings for "Darkness on the Edge of Town" album.
He was very happy with what Patti Smith did with it and so gave permission for a "double credit" in authorship.

I love Duran Duran but they have some awful covers - Perfect Day isn't great but their version of White Lines, just plain bad
