Best Cover Version

I think the song that started this chat, Disturbed's Sound of Silence, is right up there as one of the best. His voice is just amazing on it.

Are we counting stuff like 'Torn' by Natalie Imbruglia? i.e. ones where the original wasn't particularly well known? Because that's up there. Same with Annie Lennox, No More I Love Yous.

Fall Out Boy's version of Beat It by Michael Jackson is awesome.

Harry Nilsson - Without You

I don't know why but I really like Pet Shop Boy's version of Always On My Mind. Might not be a popular one though. Similarly, I like what Marilyn Manson did with Sweet Dreams.

Rage Against the Machine's Renegades of Funk is a cover so that has to be up there.

Ooh, White Stripes' Jolene is great, and I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself.

Muse - Feeling Good!

There are literally thousands that I've forgotten, you could literally be constantly dipping back into this thread and adding more.
 
I like Creedence Clearwater Revivals rendition of I Heard it Through the Grapevine.

But then I also prefer the uptempo original release of the same song by Gladys Knight and the Pips (which became Motown's biggest hit when released) to the more popularly known/recognised later release by Marvin Gaye (which usurped the Pip's version as Motowns biggest hit).

Not criticising your choice, as I know lots of people like it - but I've never really liked this cover. The original by Nine Inch Nails has so much emotion and edge to it, and I felt Cash kind of just made it into a boring run-of-the-mill acoustic guitar song.

Have to admit I feel exactly the opposite. Maybe it's because I heard the cover version first, but I can't stand the original. I find the cover really emotional. But that's what's great about music. So many different interpretations :)
 
Tim Hardin's 'Hang on to a Dream'

First time I heard that song was Roger Chapman on his Chappo album.

I have listened to many other cover versions since but to me his is the best because his voice suits the shear emotion of it (it had me in tears).

Btw, I once failed a music exam in school by arguing that the Pet Shop Boys version of You are always on my mind was better than Elvis.
Not sure if my argument was wrong, but I think everyone who went PSBs way got a fail that day .

I really like Dolly Parton’s original version.

Nice to see they have my fav in there. Blinded by the light, Manfred Mann. Written and originally played by Bruce Springsteen.

Quite possibly one of the worst covers I’ve ever heard. She took a good song and destroyed it for pop culture
 
You'll never walk alone ,Jerry and the pacemakers has surely got to be the best ever cover .so many people tried to do it after Jerry and failed miserably.
Also rocking all over the world by status quo ,they made it there own. It was a creedance Clearwater revivals album track written by John Fogarty
