Benefits of joining a club?

Luckily I am in a position where I can play every weekend. Thing is, if i were paying 500+ quid to be a member at a club, I'd feel as though I had to play that course every week. I don't mind paying 50 notes.

One of the biggest advantages for me has been able to turn up whenever you like and use the practice facilities. Merrist has a great driving range, short game area and putting green. Played Milford yesterday as its part of the crown group (as a crown club member you can play at all 27 clubs for free) and boy I'm glad I'm not a member there. Practice facilities were rubbish! Recently I've been moaning about a few things around our course thinking the grass is greener on the other side, I'll shut up after playing Milford yesterday....
*edit* meant to add that the range balls are free for members at Merrist.

Depends on what you want from the game. I have 3 evenings free, and it doesn't cost to jump on the practice ground or go and play 6, 9 holes. My office is less than 5 mins from the club... lunchtime on the putting green if I fancy it. Turn up on the spur and see if anyone else is hanging around and fancies a game.

Saturday and Sunday comps, club knockouts, league matches, roll ups, craic around the snooker table, social evenings/dances. You get a lot more than you would if you paid a green fee as a visitor. Its good value for money if you have the time and inclination to use it to the full.

Like I said earlier, the club I'm looking at is only £50 a year. Get a handicap and play in comps for that. No brainer really.

Does the £50 membership give you cheaper green fees or summink?

If it's anything like ours then you'll pay for a season ticket with the golf course as anyone could without joining, or perhaps just pay and play but season tickets are usually more economical. Then pay the club for membership which would make you eligible for comps, get and maintain a handicap etc.

For me, one of the biggest benefits of club membership over pay and play is that you can go and do just a few holes. You don't have to block off half a day every time you play, if it lashes down or you are having a bad day, simply walk in. All in all this means you play more. Also, I use the facilities......e.g. often pop in on the way home from work, get myself a pint and spend half an hour on the putting green in the sunshine. It's just a nice place to unwind etc.

That is exactly what I was hoping for. A bit of guidance on certain things, My Dad is my playing partner at the moment but I dont think hes too keen on joining a club and to be honest hes just as clueless as I am.

I know etiquette is a big part of golf, I know each club is different but in the experience of the forumers, would club members just expect you to know? Playing poorly doesn't bother me as I'm almost expected to, but I'm a little worried of doing something wrong.

I just joined my first club a few weeks ago, like you I am new to golf and was worried about all the 'etiquette' but I have found as long as you follow the basics, repairs pitch makes, rake bunkers, let others play through if you are really holding them up then I have found everyone is friendly, I have been round a few times with people I didn't know when teeing off at a similar time and they found out I am new. I think the club I am at is quite chilled out. I haven't been in the clubhouse yet as I normally play after work in the week and don't finish till about 9pm. From others I have spoken too it has a great atmosphere though and lots of social functions.

The biggest advantage to me is being able to play twice a week and not worrying about cost, I have also had a few rounds where I have been awful and got to the 9th and finished there. Not having to worry about paying for a round and only playing half.

I can pop to the club whenever, especially evenings, for as few or as many holes as I want. If I want to play by myself I can - and can just potter about to my hearts content. And I am a member of a club - a large body of largely like-minded folks who care for the club and each other and who share their love of golf with all and accept their responsibilities to each other; the course; the club, and the game of golf.

Brandhall is part of the Sandwell leisure trust. Do they have an actual membership to the club? I've had a quick look at the website and its the one card scheme that Sandwell run I think. A leisure facility rather than an actual club. I wouldn't know from experience obviously but just the way it looks from the website.

I'll definitely be playing Brandhall at some point. But looking for a club to join. Warley is extremely cheap, and for a player at my level offers everything I need. Or seems to.
