Beneficial statistics?

One thing SS2 is very good at is showing your teaching pro what is going on. It's saved a lot of time by giving him the numbers via e-mail regularly and he has seen where I need to do some work and we go from there. It'll be the same when we look at a winter programme

I'm really glad that you are sticking to your game plan of not over analysing things and just hitting the ball Martin....
Feck me sideways, when do you go on tour????!!

I don't think there's any point in knowing your stats. If I'm driving badly I know, if I've not made any putts I know that too. If I miss every fairway but find every green and shoot level par I don't care about stats :)

Also there's no point in knowing your stats unless you are then prepared to put yourself on the practice ground or have a lesson to fix the weak parts.

+1, totally agree!

+2. :)

Except for the "level par" bit. :o

For me stats are pointless i go out and try and shoot my best score possible, as the saying goes its not how its how many, and no matter how many ways you look at it there is always going to be a part of your game that needs worked on. if you hit fairways and greens your going to have more putts so in that case your stats would say you are a poor putter...if you hole loads of putts but miss every fairway stats would say sort your driving oot. And if every things perfect chances are your on tour...

You cant win ;)

Jus try and get the little white ball in the little hole in as little as possible

Can see how your warm and endearing personality is charming the socks off them at work. It works for me.

I keep my stats more for interest than anything else. To me, the score is the most important number. If I miss a fairway and green but still get a par - believe me its pretty common on my scorecard - then I'm happy.

Having said that, they do point to weaknesses as long as you analyse them properly.

And why wouldn't you be? It'll help your 'srambling' stat! :D :D

You never know, you could be No1 for scrambling out of your entire club - how cool is that!!! :D

I keep stats using SS2, but I'm not sure that it's beneficial to me. I just like numbers and I do find them interesting looking back on them.

In fact, I'd like to ask a 'stat believer' who hasn't seen me play to ask for whichever stats they want from my SS2 record, and tell me what are the good and bad parts of my game.

LMAO :D nope but I could export my data as a .csv file and import it into a statistics package and conduct a regression analysis to identify if there was statistical significance in any performance criteria that consistently resulted in a good score...well a good score for me :D

Wot he said (I think)

Why not just post them all (is there space?) and then we can GUESS what you're good at :D :D

You've seen me play (albeit badly) if you can remember much of it.

Well I've crunched the numbers and figure your h/cap should be about 10.3 :D :D :D ;)

Seriously though I don't see the point in recording 71 rounds, what I've done in my last 10-15 rounds would be more than enough to see how I'm playing... frankly I wouldn't be interested in what I was doing 50 rounds ago :D

Even if you went out tomorrow and hit all 18 fairways it wouldn't change the %'s significantly and yet you could clearly see that you've improved. Maybe in the last 10 rounds you made a lot of sand saves but nothing for the previous 40 rounds. Whilst the figures shown do mean something for the year (to compare against next year perhaps) I don't think it's a true reflection on current form.

Ahhh but you can look at pockets of time. So you can look at your stats as a whole and then look at the last 5/10 rounds and compare to see if anything has changed.

I find the handicap index on SS2 helpful as it tells you roughly what handicap you are for each part of your game. Region could you post what SS2 index says? Or just the stats from your last 10 rounds.

I was keeping track of stats on my phone on the GolfShot GPS as I use it as a scorecard and GPS. It's good to look at after the round to see any trends and how many GIR etc but I know what's it's going to say before I look at it.

Similar to what JustOne's saying, you know if you've drove badly, missed greens etc so to see it on the screen just confirms what I already knew.

Tells me that if you miss the fairway youre unlikely to get it on the green. Maybe you need to work on that side of things. For example there are going to be many times you only miss the fw by a small amount and it wont affect your lie or shot to the green much. It should only be rarely that youre really in the clag and having to chop out.

Funnily enough, it can tell you that :)

46% of greens hit after hitting fairway
54% of greens missed after hitting fairway

25% of greens hit after missing fairway
75% of greens missed after missing fairway

It also records where you miss the green, and if I have no viable shot to try for GIR I record it as unspecified.

They make up 18% of my misses so approx 11% of the time my tee shot leaves me no shot at the green.

With a heavily numeric academic background, I tend to agree with the philosophy that statistics are like a lamppost to a drunken man – more for leaning on than illumination.

I have now obtained ‘scoresaver2’, mainly to manage handicaps for our little society, but am getting sucked into all the bells & whistles – I have printed off the detailed sheet for this weekends round, and am likely to collect all the FIR GIR no. of putts sand saves driving distance etc…

I would be interested if anyone thinks this level of analysis has really helped anyone progress over a more intuitive / common sense approach?

Got an app on the phone that covers what you mention and in all honesty it does bugger all for my game. I tend to spend to much time over analysing things and thinking to much. Ive now opted for one round a month using the stat manager, otherwise i just enjoy the hacking.

Though it pains me i must agree :D :D

I couldn't disagree more.

In my experience amateur golfers have completely warped opinions on where the strengths and weaknesses in their game are.

Recording and analysing your stats forces you to look at the long run of you game and forget about "that day where you couldnt make a putt" or "that round where you hit every fairway" and look at your game objectively, without the interference of memories.

Humans naturally remember certain things and block out certain others that they maybe dont like. (Like that time where you skulled 5 chips in one round even though your chipping is "the best part of your game") Recording your stats forces you to be honest with yourself.

Also if you have a limited amount of practice time like most of us, then knowing exactly what you need to work on to improve your scores becomes even more important!

I do need to practice what I preach though as I stopped keeping my stats when I stopped playing often enough. Now Im getting back to the game though Im going to start doing it again.
