Just had my first ever golf lesson. It was really great. He started by videoing my swing hitting a few balls, then showed me a split screen agaisnt a pro (David Toms I think). It then showed me the differences and what I was doing wrong. We then just working on my grip, stance and posture. It was relly good and i was hitting the ball much better at the end of it.

He said I should have about 1-2 weeks between lessons to work on what we've done. Was just wondering whether you guys think I should just stay on the range and practice or go out on the course a few times too.

Bit of both, I'd say.

I'm in the midst of a series of lessons and the Pro is keen for me to do some range work as well as play. I find hitting balls on the range about the most boring thing ever, but he's told me to use the range as if I were on the course, i.e, hit a driver, then a six iron, then a wedge etc. Take time to hit each shot rather than just blasting 100 balls as near the back fence as you can! ;)

I think you need to do some range work so you are confident with the changes he has made. Nothing worse than trying to play a course and not having any confidence or spending your time over every shot wondering if its all ok and whether you'll make good conduct. Not conducive to good scoring. Once you're happy just go out and play. Don't think about any technical issues but trust what you've been shown and worked on and enjoy the fruits of your hard work with a great low score

Thanks guys. I think I probably will stick to the range for a while. Have already been twice today! I think I may bankrupt myself with this sport...

Conor, I'd say get out playing if you can, the range is good but can get boring. These short evenings are a good time for you to get out to the course without too many others following you. I went out last Tuesday at 5, it was a lovely evening but there weren't a lot of people out playing so myself & the lad I was with ended up playing 2 balls each & nobody caught up to us.

Another thing to think off is to maybe head out to the first tee with only about an hour of daylight left & you will probably be the last out. Ok you will only get an hours play but it's better than being at the range & you won't be nervous with other people waiting behind for you to play.
