Hi everyone,

To cut a long story short I am new to the game of golf, I was offered a couple of lessons by a friend of mine to teach me the basics and I have really enjoyed them. I'm now wanting to start playing properly and have some official lessons at a local club.

I have previously borrowed my friends clubs and am now looking to buy my own set. I have looked at a couple of the packages online at around the £200 mark but aren't sure if they will suit my needs as a beginner (example link).

I was just wondering if anybody has any advice on what to buy as a first set?

Also i'm quite tall at 6'3", would I be best getting clubs slightly longer than regular?

Sorry if this question has been posted before as well!

Thanks in advance!
Chris

I bought a wilson package set - http://www.golfgeardirect.co.uk/sho...s/wilson-profile-vf-golf-package-1018576.html about a year ago, dont have it now as i have upgraded.

It was quite hard to part with the set as they are actually an awesome set of clubs, the driver and irons are top notch. I now have a Callaway RAZRfit driver and notice no increase in distance or accuracy. I also have new RBZ irons and feel they are no improvement over the wilson package. The only issue i had was with the Hybrid. If it wasnt for me having an issue with buying golf clubs i would have kept them.

I'm 6'4 and when I had a lesson recently the first thing the pro said was my shafts needed lengthening so its probably worth thinking about. Mine are 1.5" longer than standard and it does make a difference.

If I was you I would look online for something like the Ping G5, the Callaway X14 or X 16 or some Taylormade Burner irons. Very forgiving clubs, all have been superceded but still ideal for a beginner and will last longer than a starter set. Have a word with a local pro, or the pro giving you lessons and see if he thinks you need them extending. It can be done pretty cheaply by a good pro

Thanks for the help guys. I've been advised to get clubs an inch longer from the shop. I'm tempted to buy one of the sets however some people have mentioned it would be best to buy either second hand or buy clubs separately as they will last longer and probably be better quality. The only down side to that is being a newbie I don't really know what I'm looking for!

Thanks again,
Chris

Chris - my advice would be to go waste some time in some golf shops - and hit lots of types of clubs. See what you like. Choice is very subjective - and what is right for one golfer might not be for another. I think that all of the manufacturers make pretty decent kit. A lot will also depend on whether you are going to be someone who buys a set and then thinks about changing them in 20 years - or someone who is going to change every ten minutes...(new shineys can be very alluring - but have never knocked any shots of my handicap!)

Custom fitted Pings you won't go wrong with, if you're prepared to spend a few quid.

make though not that important, there's a lot of tosh written about various brands. I used to play with a guy who had a 6 handicap and used Masters irons.

Does not sound like much of an upgrade to me if your £300 driver and £500 irons are no better than your £200 set...

To the op, I would have your lessons and speak with the pro, often they will have or can get decent 2nd sets, at least ask his advice! That's why he is a pro! It all comes down to money, if you have it in buckets, then yeh go to ping, taylormade whomever and get fitted, but be prepared to shell out at least a grand.. A year or 2 old set could be picked up for sub £300 ish. Personally I wold suggest a premium second hand set over a budget new set...

Personally I'd go with the Ping G range or callaway X as Homer suggested. The Dunlops are cheap but will have no sell on value when you want to upgrade to a better club.

wow i see a lot of great and smart threads, well i am also new to the game and was wondering i am 5' 7" and my brother in law has the Callaway X14 I THINK,and they are just sitting in his garage he got some new ones, would the Callaway be fitting for my height i am yet to try them out in a few days i hope, but wanted to ask you guys for advice

greetings John

My dad bought a Wilson starter set last year and even playing off 28 the golf bug has caught him and he's already upgraded to Callaway gear. I suggested he got the Wilson set to get him going but after seeing them Id say the quality of them is poor and that it would have probably been better to get a the best 2nd hand set you can for £200. Some 1 or 2 year old Taylormade, Pings, Mizuno etc anything really. The Wilson shafts were as floppy as a peice of string and irons felt dead with very little sweet spot, if any at all. His games got so much better with the older Callaways than it ever did with the Wilsons.

Don't worry about a driver just yet a 5w or 3w will do you for now.
