Hello all, just a quick note to introduce myself. Given the topic title and my username you may not be surprised to read my name is Anthony and I have just started my journey in the world of Golf and I live in Milton Keynes!

I have recently enrolled on a number of group lessons and also a number of private lessons with my 2 young kids and having borrowed a set of Ping Eye 2 irons from a friend (I did spend some money on a putter!) I am now getting out on the par 3 at Abbey Hill GC, getting round in the mid 30s, so not pulling up any trees, but not a total disgrace!

I was wondering if anyone could recommend the best way to get involved in regular social games with other people of a similar standing, or experienced players with patience and time to waste ;)

If this is not the best forum for a beginner, please let me know where else I should be looking.

You're in the right place Anthony. There are plenty of folk around here who will be able to give advice and even arrange games with you. Your ability and experience have very little to do with it. Just get stuck in and ask questions. Welcome aboard.

Hi Tony,

I just took up the game last year. I enrolled or was drunk and put my name down for the pub golf outing despite having no golf clubs or a golf costume. I begged and borrowed a mish mash of golf clubs and spent £10 on 100 balls on gumtree and went along. Sports Direct saw me geared up in bright pink Dunlop trousers and shirt combo, both cost me £20 combined. My mate had the matching bright blue costume!

Loved it and have been hooked ever since. Its a great challenge and frustrating. Hitting a ball 200 yards then duffing it 15 with the next can be strangely addictive!

Never thought about going for lessons do you enjoy them and do you think they have helped? I like the challenge and just try to "malky" it.

I was lucky as there are four of us who started off by going to the pub golf day and as a result golf together all the time and all of roughly the same standard. We're now talking about joining somewhere.

Hello Anthony,

I live in MK too, but play my golf at Leighton Buzzard GC. As you're not a member of Abbey Hill GC yet, it maybe an idea to get together with other folks from your group lesson and arrange to play round with them. Is David Armour taking your classes? He's a very good coach, and a decent chap to boot.

If you join a club (Abbey, Leighton etc.), they usually have a number of roll ups during the week and should be easy to find one that fits with you. It's not so easy to find playing partners without membership, unless you have some like minded friends.

The par 3 at Abbey is quite good fun actually, a good challenge and usually in quite good nick for a public course. It's where I started my son and wife playing, and we still play it on odd occasions as it's good practice for the short game, but we all mainly play at Leighton now. If you ever want to give Leighton a try, let me know, I can arrange to show you round.

Enjoy your golf.

Hello and welcome you've found the best forum!
Plenty of folk from around your way so look out for games on here, sounds like you've started out the best way a few lessons to get basics is spot on, others above have covered good ways to get a game but trying to arrange something with your lesson group is a great idea you may all even be able talk your coach into joining you.
Good luck.

Hello Anthony - I don't live to far from MK (otherside of Olney) and if you are ever looking for a playing partner let me know. only been playing 12 months and have been hooked. I am a member of a course and you are free to join me for a round or I am happy to drive to MK as never played Abbey on the 18 hole course

Thank you all for the replies, clearly I have come to the right place!

Jon / NMW - I will take you both up on the offers as soon as I am '18 hole ready' I am planning to invest in drivers once I can get round the par 3 5-6 over.

Sparta - I have enjoyed the lessons so far, they have helped me with the fundamentals, as I had no clue what I was doing and didn't want to pick up bad habits from day one and cost me time in getting my drivers!

Thanks for replying.

Maybe something to think about down at the range over the winter. A few lessons could be interesting, maybe not fun, but certainly interesting.

I've been told blink and you'll miss my swing!
