Hello, I'm trying to teach my 48-year-old girlfriend how to golf. She's been an athlete her whole life, played softball in college. The issue I'm having is getting her to stop taking a step forward with her left foot (she is a right-handed golfer), she steps like she's hitting a softball. Any suggestions? I've even tried laying on the ground behind her and holding her feet down.

Have you tried telling her not to step with her left foot? I mean what do you expect do, short of giving her concrete boots? 😂 She just needs plenty of practice to get out of her old habits.

I don't know what your standard is, and whether you feel qualified to give her golf lessons, but a beginner lesson with an actual pro might be an idea, to get the basics of set-up, posture, grip etc. If she is set up properly, with her weight balanced correctly, you wouldn't really be able to lift the left foot off the ground in the backswing in the first place. She must be swaying her weight to the right side too much to allow the left foot to come up.

She's so much lifting her left foot off the ground, she's physically taking a step forward with her left foot as she swings. I've been playing for 37 years and have taught others enough to get started golfing, this habit she has I can't seem to correct. And yes, a beginner's lesson is probably in the forecast for her.

Well, as I say, I'm no pro at all obviously but it sounds like an issue of weight balance and not swaying. A pro should sort it out in a beginner lesson on set-up straight away.

Padraig Harrington actually teaches this step!
Second half of the video is what your partner could try.

Does she hit the ball reasonably well, the way she swings now?

Sometimes golfers have some strange golf habits, but they actually work very well for them.
