Evening all. Planning my Hidden Gems road trip to play Tadmarton Heath and we are looking at playing a course en route the day before. Clearly it had to be another Hodden Gem so we have narrowed it down to Bedford & County and Chiltern Forest. Just wondered if anyone had played either or both courses and would like to share their views :)

Ive played both courses on our reciprocal golf scheme at my club.

You wont go too far wrong with either of these courses but if I had to pick one I would recommend Chiltern Forrest.
Its a little quirky in places but there are some great holes with plenty of drivable par 4s, if only I could hit it straight. It reminded me of a mini Woburn for some reason, maybe it was the colours around the course, which are stunning.
A great course and I cant wait to go back.

I cant tell you much about Beds and County other than it was nice, I played like a novice that day and tried to erase the memory.

A few others worth considering in a similar area are Millbrook, South Beds and Dunstable Downs.

Thanks fella. I live closer to B&C so if it was a close call between the two would probably pick Chiltern Forest as it's further away. Looking at the websites Chiltern does look like it would be a little bit more 'fun', though not too sure about those hills ;)

I wouldnt want to leave my club to join Chiltern Forrest but like you say, it is a fun course and a fantastic day out. The place left a lasting impression, especially the quirky holes.
Id be very surprised if you were disappointed

Not played Chiltern but it has a good rep around here.
It is hilly....
Just up the road from me so if there's room for a small one...or even a larger one.

I play at South Beds and enjoy the course very much.

I dont think i would leave my club to join Beds and County but i would have to go back and play well there a few times for me to answer that fairly.

I would consider Millbrook though, a long course but a good mix of holes

If we decide to play Chiltern it will be Thursday 10th if you and/or Fragger are free. Probably teeing off at about 12.30 and grabbing some lunch before hand.

Personally prefer Beds and County to Chiltern Forest, the latter a bit too short and fiddly for my tastes though a lot really like it, personally think the course would drive you bonkers if you played it too many times.

If you are a big one short on the 10th let me know and ill try and get along

Hi net72,

looks like you're on the same reciprocal scheme as me, which club are you a member of?

I've only played Chiltern Forest of the two. I really quite liked it, I agree, a bit quirky in places, especially the 8th, which plays across another fairway, and is the highest uphill par 3 I've ever played......It's a nice challenge though, and a very long up and down walk.

I've not played Millbrook, always wanted to but it did have a bad rep with regards to being closed at random by the owner to play with his mates - at least that was told to me by a number of different people. They had to make some changes recently too, shortening the hole running along the A507 after someone drove their ball into the windscreen of an oncoming car.... They were undergoing a Safety review, waiting to determine what permanent changes they had to make to improve safety down that stretch. I don't know whether that has been completed or not.....

If you're looking in the area, Leighton Buzzard is another worth considering. Also has it's quirks, but I enjoy playing there a couple of times each week

Chilton Forest is about 2 miles from my house and I am sad to say I have never been. Shame its a week day or I would be pushing Ian and Phil out the way!

I have been told it is a little snobby up there, but to be honest there are not many courses where you dont here that from someone or other...

Agree CF is a little quirky. There is a par 3 which is about 190 vertical! which is a bit silly. Otherwise nice although tight in places, up and down the hills in the forest. No one has mentioned Pavenham Park, which is not too far away.

Our esteemed Associate Editor has now thrown a couple more suggestions into the mix including Studley Wood which I quite like the look of. If only we had time to play more than one!!! Decisions, decisions :)
