BBQs

I think that you are answering a question but not the one I asked in order to fit your preconceived notions. Are you saying that it is wrong to describe a group of black footballers as big, black and quick if that is patently what they are. That isn't stereotyping, it's a description of their appearance and one of their qualities. How on earth you can project this description into meaning that "their only useful attributes are to be strong and fast" defies logic.
No it doesn't. That's just how speech works. If I pointed at a group of people and said "look at those lazy Mexicans" the implication is that I think Mexicans are typically lazy. You wouldn't assume I was just describing them as lazy, and Mexicans as two separate and distinct statements would you??

Once again I reiterate that them being black should be an irrelevance in this day and age. If he was describing the players, as you say, calling them a group of 'big, quick' players would not be an issue at all, and sums up all of the relevant info he needed to convey.

Does this mean that black guys are wrong to refer to themselves as being ‘a black guy’

Likewise are expressions like skinny white dude wrong?

I don’t disagree that some people will be offended by the use BBQ however I genuinely struggle to see why the term BBQ is derogatory.

People will alway use a part of a persons physical attributes as an easy way of referring to them. It’s just what humans do. Be it hair colour, height, build, colour etc

Unless there is an actual derogatory word used like ‘lazy mexicans’ (as quoted in this thread) then I literally cannot see why it should cause offence.

There are still so many problems with real racism in the world and they need eradicating as fast as humanly possible.

To me sweating over of this really low level and somewhat bogus issue, just detracts from the real discrimination, nastiness and hatered that all minorities face on a daily basis.

This is counter productive. Media outlets (especially on the right) grasp on this sort of story and almost sell it as being racist. Then they make the story appear as if minority’s are over sensitive by being offended (even though I doubt the majority actually are).

This allows actual racist readers to persevere minorities to be over sensitive etc. Thus allowing them to just ignore and continue with the real racism that potentially they are a little prone too.

Bit of a long winded post that sorry. Hope it makes sense.

You don't seem to see the difference between a description of black footballers that is complimentary and a description of Mexicans that denigrates them. I've read quite a few tributes to the brilliant Aretha Franklin in the past few days and quite a lot describe her as black and the authors describe themselves as black. It seems to me that the rules surrounding what's racist and what isn't can be defined by an individual's personal preference.

How do black people/people of colour/the footballers themselves feel about that comment?

I don’t see it as deragatory, and I can’t see the players themselves being offended either. Just good use of descriptive words and possible play on BBD.

If your white and offended and the players in question aren’t, You really need to stop being a social justice warrior.

If the coach in question has been called up for inappropriate language then I'm guessing the players must have complained, otherwise it wouldn't have come to light.

As said earlier, it's not what you'd call blatant racism, it's just inappropriate in this day and age to label and generalise people by their colour. No need for it. It would not surprise me at all if the players were uncomfortable or taken aback.
