Hi there, I am looking for some advice.

I am about to Join Bangor golf club or Clandeboye. Bangor is by far cheaper, however Clandeboye has two courses. I am wondering is it worth the extra money ?

Anyone from either club who can help ?

Many thanks

Re: Bangor vrs Clandyboyde

As Chris says Brendy will be along to advise as he is a member at Bangor

But I would think its more about personal choice isnt it? Im presuming youve played both Clandeboye courses as well as Bangor? So which do you prefer and which do you feel offers best value for your money?

Ive played Bangor with Brendy and its a great course that I would be more than happy to play week in week out as a member.

Re: Bangor vrs Clandyboyde

Tough call to be honest, Bangor has a massive membership which must mean something, mostly middle aged though, like Ethan. They arent all grumpy-chops though.
We do have a strong youth setup with Michael Bannon and Stevie Gordon teaching the young guns.

Bangor has in my opinion, a good course which is in good condition most of the year, winter is always wet though, the same can be said for Clandeboye.

To be honest I dont envy your decision as there are 6-7 good courses in the area and narrowing it down to Bangor/Clandeboye hasnt been a bad choice so far.

I chose Bangor as to me it was the club that best suited my needs (club pro, facilities inc practice area, proximity to town and knowing a couple of members). We are twinned with Westport, Castlerock and Bromborough in Liverpool, we get a great rate to play these courses (playing with member rates, ie Castlerock is a bargain at £15).As well as the twinning, we are also part of the James Braid Association which gives us discount at any of the other JB designed courses across the UK & Ireland.

Our joining fee is currently half a years membership which has come down a long way since I joined in late 2005.
Our clubhouse is quite distinctive with its white paint and has been extended over the years, the main lounge was refurbished and more seating area placed earlier this year as it was a little dowdy and in need of modernising.

Clandeboye has the two courses but to be honest out of the dozens of time I have played there, the vast majority of times it has been on the bigger Dufferin Course, it is a decent test and usually in good condition. The shorter course does nothing for me, too tight in places with blind tees or seconds etc though is in reasonable condition too most of the year round.
It also has a more recently built clubhouse.
Their current fees are £900 joining fee plus similar for the annual membership.

Regardless of which club you join, Im sure youll not be disappointed.

That news would help me with the decision!

Whatever, but being armed with that news if Brendy didnt pitch into the thread he could then pm him knowing he was a member and as it was his first post he might not have known that anybody was a member. But your right I suppose

Seems like an assumption about what I meant. Perhaps I meant that if a fine fellow and discriminating golfer like Brendy chose Bangir then that would be the obvious winner.

Re: Bangor vrs Clandyboyde

Thanks Brendy for the detailed response. The other thing is, I just fall into the 29 year old bracket so I half that again, so joining fee 212.00 and 425 joining fee !!

I have played both courses, however it was a while ago and another refresher would be good, maybe at the weekend or something.

One other thing, I dont know anyone in Bangor, would you be able to propose me ? I was thinking of booking a lesson with the pro who would then hopefully help me with that ?

Thats the other thing, I will be on my own a lot of the time for competitions etc, again I take it that wont be a problem getting out as one ??

Many thanks

Re: Bangor vrs Clandyboyde

Competitions are an online booking affair on the BRS system so you just fill in where there are gaps for a time that suits you.
Ill have to organise a game at our place soon with a few of the other local guys on the forum, you get on for 15 quid and see what you think, it could maybe help you make your decision.
Ref. the pro, Michael is staying until October now so still time for a lesson with him or Stevie G. who is also a good coach who joined us a couple of years ago from the Kclub.

Re: Bangor vrs Clandyboyde

Haven't played Bangor but I have Clandeboye and found both courses to be very good and both different from the other. Also they have great practice facilities. But you are talking about £1900 to get in at the start with a further £150 bar levy to be paid every July. So approx £1150 per year.

I know a few guys that went to each place this year and last. Seems to be difficult to get tee times on a Saturday at Clandeboye and have been told by some that they found it difficult to fit in and to get a game as a new member. Whereas those that went to Bangor said that they felt very welcome by the majority of members and easy to get a game.
