Bandit or not?

I think Sundance is the one you want to ask on here. I think over the course of last season he went from 25-12 and so cleaned up along the way. It was uncomfy at the prize giving as there were several comments very close to the knuckle by members for whom the green eyed monster of jealousy had reared its head. He played all of the comps last year and was just improving. He kept getting cut and kept playing better. Not a bandit in my book as the system was keeping up with him all the time. Definitely not a cheat either. Just a guy who had a few lessons played a lot of golf and did it when it mattered

Im still getting my head round handicaps. My bro in law just joined a club, submitted 3 cards and has a handicap of 24. He hit on average 118 over the three rounds. I've played with him a year and he's never really scared 100.

Thoughts?

The 3 cards would be adjusted so that any high scores would be reduced to double bogeys. The best of the three cards would then be gauged against SSS for initial handicap award. If the best card does not justify the award of the maximum 28 handicap, the club may still award a handicap of 28. If the club is aware of any other factors, the club can allocate a handicap lower than the best of the 3 cards suggests.

I had 1 win in a stableford last year and got cut, another in the Jan monthly medal and got cut by CONGU and the handicap commitee totake me to 22 and still get called a bandit even though I haven't done anything since but still get ribbed as a bandit. I have a tough skin, hippo like, so I can take it from them.

To the OP, no I don't think you or your mate are bandits. If you've both played consistently to a number for a few years then there is no reason to feel guilty. Well done on winning.

Just to stir things up a little bit, my mate who is a member at a particular club near me (I'm not a member) submitted 3 cards which should have seen him cut from 28 to 23/24 - he only played in the 3 comps to put his qualifying cards in - and come the new season the secretary passed his cards by deciding not to adjust him (the likely scenario is that he forgot as h/caps get changed very rarely there). So the short version of the story is that he has a handicap of 28 but realistically plays to 24 even on an 'away' course. When he goes on to win the next comp, will he deserve the title of 'bandit/cheat' despite putting his cards in expecting a cut?

It's good to read that we all share the same view, that someone who plays in all the club comps and puts cards in is NOT a bandit and next person who makes a comment to me will be asked his definition of what is a bandit- that should put them on the spot, cos they either has to say he is a cheat or laugh off their comment.

I have rarely ever come across a bandit in my years of playing ie someone who artificially keeps theit h/cap high so that they can clean up in big comps or pairs comps. Thankfully the active/ non active handicap helps stop the abuse we did see where a pair of lads, claiming 20+ handicaps but really being single figure level, won some big national prizes by never playing at their club but entering loads of comps using their handicap certificates from the club to gain entry.

I love the ones that clean up in bounce games but claim that their game goes to pieces when they have a card in their hand during club competitions.
They never fail to score 42 points and take the money.
And they still moan about the shots they left out there.
Are they bandits????

I guess that's why most of the swindles do there own handicap adjustments?

Whether the guy is a bandit or not is debatable, however a 4BBB competition is not the place to make that judgement, IMO.

The necessity is to play (gross) par golf at least in these or you'll get left behind really quickly. Only one of you needs to play well each hole so the pressure is off in the most part which can free you up to be more aggressive and committed to the shots. Low scores are readily available then.

Just smile and deflect it Chris, just agree with them that the ONLY reason you won was because of your partners handicap and that you couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo so were surprised how crap everyone else was not to beat you!! :)

Then scoop it again next year!!!;)
