Thought I had hit my ball in to the pond, I dropped accordingly and carried on. Turns out I had missed read the flight and found my first on my way to the green. I picked it up assuming the ball I dropped in good faith was now the ball in play. Was that the correct thing to do?

How sure were you about the location of the ball?
On the assumption that you were virtually certain that the ball was in the penalty area, you proceeded correctly. As soon as you dropped the second ball it became the ball in play and the original was dead.

Cant play a provisional if you think your ball is in the hazard so your second ball was in play the moment you played it.

Yes I know. I don't get what your question is. If you dropped a ball and hit it without declaring it a provisional then it's in play regardless of where your first ball is found or not found.

While that is the case, what does it have to do with the OP's situation?
