Ball Markers on the green

I was playing a guy today who was using one of those big chips they use in the casinos as a marker, he had a put his ball stopped about 6 inch from the hole ,he wanted to mark it pick it up and clean it .
It was my put and his marker was interfering with my put ,so I asked him to change his marker to something smaller so it didn't interfere with my line of vision.
He said he could use anything within reason to mark his ball, which I agreed with ,but I told him that if I asked him to change his marker to something that doesn't interfere with my line of vision he is obliged to under the rules ,which he strongly disputed.
Who is right and where does it say this in the rules of golf?

There was a whopping and feisty thread on this a while back. Boy was there some hatred of those chip markers. It spiralled out of control but it was funny to see how badly some people disliked them. Poor etiquette from the player to a pretty simple request on this occasion.

You are entitled to ask him to move his marker from your line or eyeline, say one or two putter head widths sideways.

He's not obliged to change his marker, he could use a frying pan if he wanted
If was in the way then let him putt out

I think it was my first discovery that, according to some on here, all opinions are equal but some are more equal than others!

He'll like it when you ask him to move it 20 putter heads to the side.

I have similar issue with a player closer to the hole than me leaving his ball in my field of view. And it's entirely up to me what I consider my field of view and what I consider distracting. I do occasionally get funny looks when I ask someone to mark their ball when it is say 6ft from the hole at right angles to my putt. But I think players should automatically mark and pick up their ball in such circumstances in any case. But perhaps that's another (though related) discussion.

The OP says it was a 6 inch putt, either get him to tap in or if matchplay, give him the putt.

I have both types of marker in my pocket when playing, a big casino chip marker for when I`m a long way from the hole(frequently) on the green and not on anyones line(makes it easier to see it as well) and a smaller sized one that lies flush with the grass for use when I`ve left my first long putt within, say 4 foot of the hole(again frequently).

It`s all about etiquette and not being an objectionable git.
