Hi,

Brand new Prov1x out of the bag after I drowned his brother with a long iron

120yd shot over water remaining into the green

Used my brand new 52 degree cally x jaws wedge.

Nice high wedge shot

Marked ball on green, go to clean ball, notice wedge has stripped a large proportion of the ball cover off!

Not impressed

Cheers

I guess a brand new wedge with very sharp grooves is going to cut the surface up quite a bit on pretty much any ball.

Still, when it's a £4 ball I can understand the disappointment. Get some cheaper ones and then you won't feel as bad!

As a 22 handicap do you really get the most out of those balls?

From what I know you really need to compress them to make them work, can you do that?

I would suggest you get some srixon AD333s or trispeed. Much cheaper and you will increase your distance and probably you might relax as you wont be worrying about cutting them up or loosing them!

I play any old ball in general but normally treat myself to a new ball for a comp.
I normally limit myself to one per comp but forgot myself today.

Just havin a moan :)

Sticking to the same ball does help. The AD333s got me down from 17 to 14 then changing to the FG tours got me down to 12. I was compressing the ball more so the FG tours spin well where the AD333s did not. Even the the FG tours I have are all free bar 3 (won 90 in a comp and spent most of it on three dozen of the new balls). I dont worry if I loose on as I know they were free :D

Hi Scienceboy,

I'm off 22 because I'm one of those golfers that is birdy or blob.

Am more than capable of compressing a premium ball, hit a good ball, just not always in the right direction and my safe play kills me asi normally forget to commit when playing safe.

Don't want to get into club distances as I'm not into that.

I also struggle with putts.

Cheers

I've seen shredded covers on one nice shot with a milled/grooved wedge. Whether this means the ball is half-way to useless I don't know.
It's an expensive game with expensive balls.

One word... V-Easy (that is one word right bob?)

I have never heard of a birdie or blob player before! Guess I have not been in the game long enough, only been at it seriously for just over a year and a half.

I must be hitting them wrong. A ProV lasts me 2 or 3 rounds before it looks too bad to play with providing I keep it that long.
I know my grooves are quite worn now but they were new once and I've never noticed a ball cut up bad from a shot with a wedge.

Looking at the way the handicap's going Gary - keep hitting them wrong Mate!!

Newer wedges, with the new conforming grooves shouldn't rip balls up as much, although I use ProV's and other Tour balls with my MPT-10 wedges and they don't cut up particularly. And I get plenty of spin.

I play mine for as long as it takes to lose it. Had one that started off in the PM round at Blackmoor and despite my best efforts there and at Ascot it managed 37 holes. It was still in pretty decent condition until lost it with my second shot of the day the other weekend going for the glory instead of the safe option.

I think most balls including some of the more durable models are all susceptible to the curse of the new wedge

Load of cobblers. You may have been playing those balls when your handicap came down but it wasn't the balls that got you down. It was your natural improving ability that did it. You could have been playing any ball under the sun.
If I went to any teaching pro and said I was desperately trying to get down from 14 to single figures, the furthest thing from his mind would be to advise me to change the ball I'm playing with. It doesn't even enter into the equation!

Are you saying that if you had carried on playing the AD333's your handicap wouldn't have moved?????

Good point Bob,

Hehe, only posted about the cover ripping on the ball and have had all aspects of my financial status, game and course managements skills reviewed for free.

What a good forum ;)

Cheers

My swing is very steep with my scoring clubs, and i do tend to scuff the cover quite easily, but i've never actually taken a chunk from the cover.Considering the Pro v is the best ball on the market,i still find them pretty durable, and wouldn't even consider binning a ball unless it was egg shaped,and/or badly scuffed.
I can't believe anybody playing at club level feels the need to use a new (premium) ball every round.

hmmmn.....interesting.

My best ever round was played with a Bay Hill titanium ball £9.99 for 24. JOuk used noodles (?) and my mate off 23 likes Pro-Vs. Our club champ buys Solos and NXTs 3 boxes at a time off the pro.

I thought Science boys post was quite OK, but it did sound a little odd. I know what he means though. :D

Hi Mungo,

Thanks for the reply, I think you may be on to something re: steep swing as I do come right down on the back of the ball with my wedges.

Just to clarify on my ball selection before it gets out of hand, golf is pretty much the only thing I enjoy apart from my kids so I treat myself to a nice shiny new ball for a comp. I hit a very nice ball and in my mind when I do hit a bad shot the premium ball seems to lesson the damage, cheaper balls seem to magnify the error especially if the wind is blowing. It may be in my mind but so much of golf is.

If I don't lose it or drown it then I play with it until I do, no matter how scuffed or scruffy it gets. I do keep balls and my clubs clean so they don't get damaged by detritus from club or ball.

I use any balls that I find on the course and am not a brand snob.

Cheers
