Bad fitting experience

My fitting at Titleist was about 1 1/2 hours for irons and a hybrid, and I only hit ZBs as that was what I asked for. If I was to consider other iron heads as well, then I would guess about 2 hours would be about right.

I hit so many balls, that I got blisters on my hands. Certainly way more than 2 with each club.

I only hit a 6i, which is all you need. 1 and a half hours hitting 6i is way more than enough time to c/f it. We went through 4 different shafts, in various lengths and various lies, and then 4 grip sizes. Continuously going over old ground, to make sure when I went back to my preferred option it was still correct and the most comfortable/consistent.

When I left, I was happy with my choice. And I still am.

Tony , i haven't recieved a reply from them yet and to be quite honest i couldn't care less if i didn't get one , i just sent the email to let them know what was happening in some of their fitting centres.

Murph , i'm going to Titleist (Kings Acre) next week for a c/f session with some of the irons that they have so hopefully i'll have more joy with them.

Oh and Tony my horror story was with Mizuno (please don't take offence as i know how much you and some of the other guys on here love your Mizuno sticks).

Barry I wouldn't take offence, but I would think (like to think) that this is probably an isolated incident because of the feedback I have received from others and had first hand myself.

Quite rightly you should email the company and let them know whats going on, I know mizuno take a lot of pride from offering there fitting service free of charge. The reason they dont charge for it is because they are so confident that your experience with them, will make you trust there brand.

Maybe this guy was having a bad day and took it out on your, that isn't an excuse for the A** ***e by the way, but I dont think mizuno can be held personally responsible for the actions of 1 idiot of an employee.

Which fitting centre was it at?

Very interested, as ever, to read the posts in this thread for a very good reason. I have decided that the 16 year old irons should be put out to pasture, and want to go through the c/f process. I am interested in Titleist and Mizuno clubs primarily, and have been torn between visiting the specialist (single manufacturer) fitting centres, or a place where they can give a similar service but with a wider choice. In any event, I intend to buy through my pro at West Malling (who incidentally offers custom fitting but not with a launch monitor).
So I am keeping my options open, with a visit to Mizuno at New Malden next week, followed by an appointment later in the afternoon at Pachesham GC where Mizuno were based until recently (not aware of the reason behind the move).
It will be interesting to compare and contrast the results and to experiment with the different makes, although in spite of what I said at the top, neither venue appear to offer Titleist, which is a shame.
Through my own inclination and from reading forummers' many posts on the subject, I am convinced that c/f is the right approach and just hope that I am not subject to the same unfortunate experience as OP.
I'd be ever so interested to know which Mizuno centre caused the grief...

What would you expect from a custom fitting ?

From what i've been reading on the forum since i joined , i do believe that you are correct Tony in that it is an isolated incident as Mizuno c/f seem to get very good write ups from other forumers .I would have much rather the guy from World Of Golf (Clydebank) phoned me up and cancelled and re-arranged my appointment for another day or when he could be arsed.

Murph, i hope that the experience that you had with Titleist is something that i can look forward to next week when i go.Can you tell me did you take you're old 6 iron to compare against the new ones or did you just start from scratch?

Also can anyone tell me if they have been to Kings Acre for a custom fit session and what they thought of it ?, as i'm quite sure i've read about a couple of the other guys on here mention the course.

Just back in from a wee practice session at Kings Acre. The fitting centre is based in two/three bays at the far end of the range. Its seperated from the rest of the range for a bit of privacy during fitting sessions or lessons. The range itself is one of the best if not the best in Scotland. Accurate distances to multiple flags on large target greens.

Hope things work out with your Titleist fitting session.

Yes mate, you do need to take your old 6i as a stake in the ground so to speak. They need to see how you swing. Obviously if they can't get better stats out of the new sticks, you are going to be disappointed with the whole shebang.

Cheers mate i thought that i would have to take it .I'm prepared to lose a bit of distance as my current clubs are Wilson Ci6 which are slightly longer and have a stronger loft than forged irons , but with the correct shaft , loft and lie set up i'm sure the distance loss will be minimal

I have had both good and bad custom fit experiences. Bad was with Direct Golf, staff member watched me hit a couple of balls, said that all seemed OK and that was it. Worse was with AG, was looking for a 4i hybrid, tried a few then sales assistant brought out a 5i hybrid because he felt I would hit it better, tried to explain trying to fit a loft gap but this was ignored.

Great experience with strikerightgolf, a club fitter near Northampton. Spent half an hour discussing my game, an hour and a half hitting balls and trying various options then another hour when I came to collect the clubs checking that the fittings were correct and worked for me.

Sadly much of the custom fitting offered by the big stores is not what I would class as custom fitting. It is generally limited to static measurements and also to the specs that suit the manufacturers production processes so shaft options are very limited.

have said before, would love to see the magazine do an undercover report on custom fitting to see what services are being offered and have the work checked over by a top club fitter. Sadly I suspect that this would be an unrealistic expectation as would annoy too many advertisers etc.
