It can be a bit frustrating this time of year, I find it hard to get into it at the range at this time of year, everything feels a bit stiff in the cold(well almost everything) but I usually play better when im crap in practice. It's a strange game.

Hey All

I had a massively bad night at the range last night, everything went to pot. No idea why. It improved a little towards the end but was depressingly awful to start.

Annoying thing was that the week before I was nailing it in the course, two days running.

Am I the only one who has the occasional shocker? This has happened before and bounced back but its so depressing.

Yep, happened to me a couple of weeks back, me and a couple of mates went to the range, i started of by give one guy an exhibition "8 iron, fading in to the green, 140 yards" no problem, punching shots, floaty shots, even hit little draws, my goodness i was so happy. Then the shanks came and didn't leave for the rest of the session. I think it's just a mind set, i know i start to shank when my hips move towards the target too quickly. I think this was it. It dissapeared the next session.

Yes, it also happened to me three weeks ago when a young boy came in to watch and see how it should be done. Disaster, about 30 missed shots in succession. Was My face red?
Next time I was back to my usual (mixed) form.

Dont worry about it my man. Thats the beauty of golf - last night is history, tomorrow night is a mystery.

Everyone has a bad patch now and again, however today i had my best session for a long time, been reading lots of golf books while its snowed and put it into practice today, well pleased.

I share your pain, I hit a bad shot on the range once.......2004 I think it was. Got a 3 iron a bit off the toe. :D

No luck mate have been there many times ,and been on the verge of giving up, but spent all morning there 200 balls hands are aching but was flushing my irons all morning think have finally got the hang of these now.
After the tips i got from the guys on here i worked on the them today and noticed a big difference ,cheers for the advice again guys. :)

Ha I'm glad i'm not the only one. It's just unusual for me to have such a shocker. Hitting the range again tonight to redeem hopefully. I'll update later...

I don't get too hung up if I hit the ball badly providing I'm working on a swing change or something specific as I know it will come, If however I'm just there for a bucket to keep the swing going and I have a bad day then I'm in a real foul mood for ages.

I think it depends on how you practice. Is it quantity over quality and are you working on a specific swing change. Try not to have any emotional attachment to the shot and trust yourself. We all have bad sessions and the secret (which I am learning) is not to let it get to you

I never go on the range when hitting it well on the course.Come to think of it i never go on the range full stop.I thought the game was for pleasure,or am i missing something ?

Why worry  crikey.

Now, if it was the other way round, great on the range, crap on the course.............. :) :)

Golfmmad.

I always have a shocker at the range, I just cant play there.

Not so bad off the grass but the matts I struggle to do well off.

Same as Tony. Hate mats with a passion so never go to the range.
If my ability (what little I have) as a golfer was judged by what I am capable of at a driving range, I'd be selling all my gear tomorrow and buying fishing rods.

My range-visits nearly always go the same.

Bit of stretching, hit a bunch with the 7I to warm up, (usually good), then a mix of 9I, PW and SW, (usually good), then some longer irons, (usually average to poor), then some with the driver and 3W, (usually poor).

Last time I was almost the opposite. For some reason I simply couldn't hit the short irons and I was duffing the club into the mat and shanking them and everything. For a laugh I went to my 5I and 3I and hit some cracking shots, (even rolling one 3I up to the 230-yard green!!). Driver and 3W were still pretty poor though.

It's rare for my short irons to be so bad, but unheard of for my long irons to be good at the same time.
