Back Injury - Question

Hi All,

I am gutted...got Thursday & Friday booked off work, first days off I've had in ages, the sun is shining and I've been really looking forward to playing a few rounds in the glorious weather.

Trouble is, I've got really bad pain in my lower back (so bad I seriously doubt I'll be playing for a while). Now this is not something I suffer with usually and my question is...

I've recently changed my address position when playing following advice from my golf coach - I've been trying to keep my back straighter and bend more from the hips. Does anyone know if this could've caused my misery - maybe I'm doing it wrong or does this just put more strain on the lower back?

Any advice or just general sympathy would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,
Marc

Feel your pain buddy

I had a prolapsed disc 4 years ago, ended up having a back operation.

You cannot take any chances with your back, try rest. often these things clear up in a few days

If it persists, see your doc or see an Ostropath, worked for me.

Good luck

Fragger

Similar to the Fragger, I have suffered with a bad back for years, and had pretty major surgery eventually. I find the more active I am the better.

If it doesn't show any improvement in a week or so I would get yourself to a good Physiotherapist or possibly a Chiroprator don't rate Osteopaths myself, caused me a pretty major setback!

Most important thing is to make sure you are stretched off properly before playing every time you play or practice.

Hope it eases soon, there really is nothing worse :(

Yes it could have as you might be using muscles you haven't used for a while. I got a sore back after changing my putting stance so that I was a lot more over the ball.

I doubt if it would add any MORE strain than there is already, although I'm not an advocate the 'straight back' position (I prefer slightly slouched as it's more natural).

I also suffer from pretty bad back pain and I'm currently waiting on an MRI scan.

My problems don't stem from the golf but from the fact I sit at a desk for 8/9 hours a day and drive 1 hour to and from said desk each day. Thats the root of the problem and the golf actually helps ease this pain off by helping manipulate the disc back to where it belongs!

Plenty of stretching before ansd after the round though and I don't go out on the course without hitting at least 20/30 balls on the range first

Cheers all, am back at work today, having been to the docs and got anti-inflammatory painkillers. The back's feeling a bit better although not 100%. Killed me not getting out there this weekend! Going to try to get fit for a charity match on Saturday - make my first swings in a week or so down the range tonight and see how it goes.

It sounds like more time in stretching / prep may be of benefit and I agree - keeping the back too straight does seem a bit unnatural. That's the thing with this game - it's got to be just right but somehow completely relaxed. Baffles me most of the time!

Thanks again,
Marc
