No no no no no....think of the bigger picture fella:

This is the Andromeda galaxy which is the closest galaxy to us (its still 2.5 million light years away) and consists of approx 1 trillion stars, each of which is like our Sun, each star will have its own group of planets orbitting it....now you tell me that there isnt life on just one of these planets out of a possibly hundreds of trillions!!

Whole thing fascinates me too, which is why astronomy and astrophotography is a bit of a hobby of mine. It's been a more expensive hobby than golf so far, even after one full year and one associate year of membership at my local club!!

However, the satisfaction of aiming the camera up and shooting something you can't even see with the naked eye is great.

I took this photo the other week. The object indicated with the arrow might not look like much, but it's one of the brightest known objects in the universe. It's 2.4 billion light years away, and if it was 3.2 light years away it would appear as bright as the sun. (If our sun was 3.2 light years away we'd hardly be able to see it!)

Oh, and that's a weird picture of Andromeda there...it usually looks mostly brighter. Beats my attempt at it though. (Though I can't wait for it to rise again, so I can try my new telescope on it!!)

This is a fascinating thread. The whole picture is to big to comprehend as I see it.

As to whether we're alone here. Definately not.

I have this theory that we are aliens on this planet, and thus why we believe that there is something out there.

We are the only creatures on this planet that has such unique abilities, the ability to create and destory at such a huge level. No other creature on this planet can do what we do. We cannot agree as a race how we came about, evolution or the religious version (for which the term escapes me). There are just no conclusive arguments as to our origin. Thus why I think we did 'arrive' here. I don't know how or why. Maybe Earth was the galaxies 'Australia' or New Worlds America. I just don't know.

I don't follow any religious or cult path, therefore I don't know if that is one groups thinking or not. But I do know one thing. Ands that's, that we don't know!

Okay, you can call me weird!!

OK I do agree with that. There must surely be another planet like ours, somewhere out there far far away with similar conditions for life like we have on Earth. I just don't think we'll ever witness, acknowledge, or learn of it.

But I would like to think that billions of light years away, there's another GM Forum with Gustavo playing off scratch :)

Golf was invented by aliens! http://www.onthegreencomic.com/2008/02/15/did-aliens-create-golf/

My understanding is that 1 light year is the same time as a human year - it is a measure of how far light will travel in a year - more a measure of distance than time maybe???

How cool that I join a golf forum, and someone posts about astronomy, my second favourite thing :)

OK then Andrew, if you'd be so kind,,,,

can you please explain to me - in basic terms if possible :D, where Earth sits within the Milky way, galaxy, universe etc etc.????

I understand the basics but can't quite get my head around the whole glaxy, milky way, star system bit :(

and as a completely trivial point, where does all of Star Trek take place? The whole universe or just the milky way?

my head hurts

Thanks,
John.

We have Paul Money where we live, he is a clone of Patrick Moore, close friend of Moore too, now he will explain it all to you and his methods and mannerisms ;)are a scream.

Exactly, it's a measure of distance. Same as a parsec, (so how the Millenium Falcon made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs is a bit of an oddity, especially as the Kessel Run is a very dangerous route between two black holes!!)
