• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

At what point does golf become an obsession?

A. When all you talk about is golf, you go on days out and picture a few trees chopped down would make a lovely par 5, you keep your clubs cleaner than your car, you write a blog as the people you talk to no longer listen, you give your individual clubs names rather than numbers (my driver is called RAlph after wreck it Ralph), you go to the pub with mates or mrs only to realise you are suitably dressed to go and play 18 holes.

Eh? You have names for your clubs?

For some reason, I thought you were about to Ralph was be a big dog.

I think once you've hit a decent shot, you're there.

That feeling when you hit a shot that any pro on tour would be happy with, and i'd bet we've all played at least one in our golfing lives, is like no other feeling in the world.

But of course, playing once a week and having a practise every now and again, we're not happy with a perfect shot once every three or four months are we...... each shot has to be perfect. Strive for more. Lessons, videos, practise, more lessons and a few more videos...

This bug bites hard!

No, up until last year I was still going.

Prices (normally £45 minimum for an away match now, £60 for some of the cockernee clubs) mainly, and going to Middlesborough away for the 18th time starts to get a bit boring.

Instead of two away matches, I could go and play Hillside, Formby etc.

When you both forget that your eldest, who no longer lives at home, is coming round for tea (or dinner if you are posh) and you've gone out for a quick nine holes.

I wouldn't know!!! It can't be beaten, the swing is always on loan and there will always be more bad days than good ones. It is the good ones that keep us coming back and it is that drive to try and tame is that will always keep me coming back again and again

Anyone who performs practice swings in the living room, work etc.

I think the acceptance of the obsession for me was when I was practicing the swing in the server room at work. I quite often head out to the garage to grip and swing a club now and again. The wife truly thinks I have lost it :)

I've got a golf training grip with a built in laser to show your plane line, showed up an out-to-in swing, after adjusting I now can now nail it down the middle of the living room regularly. :D
