We have a public course a couple of miles down the road. I've started heading down at about 730 every evening to play six or seven holes or practise my short game.
As the clubhouse is closed, I just park at an 'alternative entrance' that's a few holes in and jump on the course.

Does anyone else do this? Feel mildly guilty about not paying but if the clubhouse is closed then what can you do?

approach them and get a season ticket or tell them what you are regularly doing and maybe agree a nominal fee you pay them at the end of the week or something. The fact you are posting knowing you are doing wrong makes me think you want to make ammends?

I know there are people doing the same thing at my course which is a members one and it completely grinds my gears.

Are you paying anything when you play these few holes. Even a few quid token greenfee through the letter box would be better than jumping on for free and nice karma.

If you continue to play without paying then may every drive be a slice into trouble, every iron shot be fat, every wedge be a sherman and every putt lead to another, then another, then another ad infinitum.

Spot on with the posting money through the lettebox thing karmas a ****er mate

The first time you did it you might have had every intention of paying, but every time since you know you aren't going to be able to pay and still play.

You are stealing. End of

When I used to manage golf courses I closed two very good pitch and putt courses.
They were losing £80K pa due to folk like you jumping on and refusing to pay.
We even had folk sitting in £30k cars waiting for the attendant to finish for the day so that they could go on with bags of balls and rip the place to bits. Huge areas of well hit divots and no effort whatsoever to replace them.

There was uproar from the public when the courses closed.

Is this a wind up? Of course you should pay. Just call them and ask what the form is for playing after the clubhouse closes.

Sorry, I'm a bit sceptical about the numbers and reasons.

Why didn't you employ someone - or pay existing staff a bit more as 'overtime' - to ensure the freeloaders actually paid. For an investment of 5K, you would have had a return of 20-30k (and that's only 25-35% return from your numbers).

They may have been losing £80k and had a problem with freeloaders, but I doubt it was because of freeloaders!

As for the OP's question. Consider yourself slated. Stick some cash through the letterbox or find out how best to pay for you use of their facilities.

I used to climb over the fence at my local muni.

I never felt too bad about it, as I was paying £10 twice a week and £40 annual fee to hold my handicap. That's about £500 a year give or tak

It was hardly organised golf, just messing around with a wedge and putter. If I'd been caught with a full set and trolley playing holes 2-8, I'd probably have been in big trouble.

We never had yearly passes b.t.w.

The fact you are driving there and playing doesn't look too good really.

I think I'd probably pop in sometime and ask about playing out of hours, not making any suggestion or admitting having done it. They might have a system, and then you could pay/play 9 officially and clear your conscience.

I'm sure that those on this forum who have commented on this subject, have never done something as bad in their lives as playing 9 holes without paying.

Given that it's a public course and the public have right of access, I'd hardly call it theft!
I accept it isn't the right thing to do but every divot is replaced and every pitchmark repaired. That's better than the majority of golfers I've met. If the clubhouse was open when I finish work I'd speak to them but until then, I see no harm in practising my short game when it affects nobody.

People are charged to use their facilities. You use their facilities and don't pay. It's theft.

Absolutely laughable that you are trying to justify what you do by saying you replace divots and repair pitchmarks. What a hero you are.....

I guess that's about 14 to 1 that its wrong/theft. It would appear that the golfing fraternity have given you a pretty clear opinion. So do you intend to pay your share of its upkeep or continue to let others pay your share?

Local facilities and services are being cut throughout the UK. Get your hand in your pocket...
