I thought it was good of him to get it out before the squad announcements, means the young stars going to Brasil won't be overshadowed by him being left out.

Agree - seems sensible that the manager tells those not in the squad in advance of the public announcement so that the individual can decide what they want to do and the message that they individually want to put out. Eminently sensible all round.

Ignoring the off field stuff, he has been a solid and dependable player for England with over 100 caps. Would I have taken him to Brazil? Probably but Hodgson wants youth to have a chance and so he's called it a day.
Would have been nice to have had a more defensive left back. Think we might be doing a fair bit of defending at the World Cup.;)

Problem now could be that if Baines or Shaw get injured before the World Cup, who is the back up ? Typical of England that we have strength in depth at left back.

Hodgson had already said he would be calling the unlucky 7 last night with the news.

And that's good. Saves us having to put up with (or ignore as case may be) any whinging from players that they would like to have known in advance of announcement etc etc. And as far as Cole coming out with his statement in advance of the announcement - well Hodgson isn't going to be bothered and possibly encouraged it.

HODGSON should have used this world cup to have a proper clear out and chose only young players to mould a team for the future, lets face it we will play 3 games and be back home, give the kids a free rein and see how we get on.

Heard a rumour that city cud be in for in with him being English, cheap and available. Not to sure how I would feel about that, yes he would be an on field asset, but his off field antics have disgusted me in the past. And seeing as I have already lauded city's dressing room and lack of idiots in there, not sure how cole would fit in.

He could bring his air rifle.

Bit crass some having a go at Cole,no matter what you think of him as a man he has over 100 caps for his country and was regarded as one of the best defenders in world football.

I thought he handled his retirement with good grace and wished management and players well.

In my opinion ranks alongside Gazza, Scholes and Lineker as the English players truly living up to the 'world class' tag we seem to put on anyone who can remotely kick a ball in the right direction! Lost count of the number of times he had Christiano Ronaldo in his pocket during his time in England. Hope he stays at least another season at Chelsea - showed towards the end of the season how good he still is.

Still cannot believe that Lampards has been picked though. Amazing player for both club and country, but cannot see how he will last in the heat in Brazil.

I am guessing he's a sub, coming on during second half if we need someone who can hit a rocket, or general experience to tie up a lead, or to take a penalty, or to replace Gerrard as captain. That's quite a lot of potential roles he can fill which not many, if any, could

I think you're spot on there mate.
I didn't expect Lampard to go tbh,but I'd definitely have picked him. Gerrard isn't exactly a spring chicken & could struggle in the later stages of a game,Lampard would be the ideal replacement.
