He could have waited till after the announcement, but his statement was quite gracious and supportive of the manager and squad.

It's funny how different people have different readings of the same situation. I thought it was done pretty well, maybe he had Roy's blessing to go early, it then stops all the questions being about who's not in the squad.

not sure it matters too much. He's played a few games recently and shown he's just as good. Roy always said 2016 was in his mind. With rumours of walker out as well as Roy saying UTD had underachieved. Hopefully a young rb will get a chance too

Cashley has done some things in the past that have made him look a tool but this isn't one of them

I thought it was good of him to get it out before the squad announcements, means the young stars going to Brasil won't be overshadowed by him being left out.

Ignoring the off field stuff, he has been a solid and dependable player for England with over 100 caps. Would I have taken him to Brazil? Probably but Hodgson wants youth to have a chance and so he's called it a day.

Never been a massive fan of him, but felt that the way he carried himself on Twitter regarding this was commendable. Nice, succint announcement, and it still counts as "retiring", because he chose not to be a back up (understandable given his age). I also agree with Roys decision to take youth, I feel the miles he has in his legs may have been an issue playing frequently in high temps/humidity in the WC.
