Are you any good?

All depends on your perception and who you play with really. The people I play with on a regular basis are in the 0-3hcp range which makes me crap but I'm better than most of you weekend warriors :ears:

:D

"Better" is relative. I've seen you play... well, almost play. Although, to be fair, you'd be scratch at finding your ball in the trees... is that why you prefer links golf, no trees?

I was kinda thinking the same way as Duncan, being a golfer is much more than what score you can shoot

Good golfers are happy to repair your pitch-mark for you, are ready to rake the bunker when you’ve taken 2 or more to get it out, keep a good eye out for your wayward tee shots, give a bit of encouragement after a poor couple of holes, always play ready golf, pay their side bets with a bit of banter etc etc etc and are generally good guys/gals to spend a few hours with

Oh and good golfers don't have manky shoes!

Excellent golfer - invites you to his course as a visitor, first to the bar, polite, humourous, patient and excellent etiquette.
Good golfer - arranges games, does the scoring, good fun to be with and has been known to buy a round.
Average - usually available to make up a game, buys the tea at the halfway Hut, is good at finding your ball in the rough (because he practices by hitting his in the rough a lot) and has a good range of golf jokes.
Poor golfer - cries off with weak excuses, usually last to arrive, changes in the car park and expects someone else to have sorted out the green fees. Has a series of standard phrases which he trots out at any opportunity (where did that come from, that's got snow on it, I never shank...) and will half heartedly offer to buy the last round - but is more likely to have to have it pointed out that it's his turn. Thinks 5 hours is a quick round and usually has some sandwiches in his bag as he's always in a rush (except on the course).
Bad golfer - I'll leave this to others to define.

This deserves a whole new thread.:thup:

Brian I've upgraded myself to an excellent golfer. You are welcome anytime at either my treeless links or heathery almost treeless heathland courses :D

Oh eck!

I'm rubbish

Some of you have extremely high standards. If you are single figures you must be considered a good golfer.

Look ok at people who play football. Sure we all have a friend who play for country growing up and plays for a local team semi professionally. You would call them a good footballer. Surely it's the same for golf.

I'm off 13 and I consider myself fairly decent!

There may be hope for you, how many points do you fail on? :D

Well, I do repair other people's pitch marks, and I do rake the bunkers after them, and I do watch their tee shots, and honouring a bet is a must.

But the first 3 I do purely for selfish reasons. I want to get on with the game - oh no, we're back to the slow play issue!

To most non-golfers anyone who is keen enough to be a club member and plays regularly would be considered a decent player. To regular golfers it's always subjective. To me, anyone who gets to single figures and stays there I would class as a good club golfer. Staying cat 1 is a big step beyond that as the handicap system demands much greater consistency.

Surely tho' to really be considered a 'good' golfer you should not require the help of a h/c, ie you are scratch or better, everything else has to be considered as varying grades of mediocrity.

Ditto.

Played a scratch KO years ago away at Yeovil and after walking off the last green 3 under I had still lost the match by one hole.

Same as.

Walked (strutted) into the clubhouse after the Welsh Mid Am rd1 with my 73 thinking I played well..............that's just the 7 (SEVEN) shots behind then!!

Get back in your box chopper 😂

Nope, moments of genius in amongst loads of rubbish, though have only been playing a year and following a fitting on Monday have just found out my clubs are an inch short, roll on Saturday stableford when they will be the right length and regripped. But then I have had a 38lb carp so can't be good at everything

Like I said it's subjective (and perhaps a bit pointless) but what I mean is that in general conversation people tend to say things like "he was a good player when he was younger, got down to 7", or maybe "I've been drawn with a couple of good players in the medal, they're off 6 and 8" etc. I don't think a player has to be scratch for the word "good" to be used, that would mean we had no good players at our club!
