Often when speaking to people and it comes up that you play golf the question is always asked 'Are you any good?'

I have a hard time answering as I think most people who play golf always think they should be better than their handicap actually is.

So for a bit of fun how would you define how good a golfer is? I would say

HC 2 and better = Great golfer
3-5 = Very Good Golfer
6-9 = Good Golfer
10-18 = A golfer
19-28 = poor
28+ = get off the course and back to the range;)

My swing is uglier than I am, my scoring is pretty ugly too, therefore I now consider myself to be pretty much rubbish at golf, however I am now enjoying the game pretty much more than I ever have done, I struggle to break 80 these days but frankly I 'ain,t bovvered, I'm enjoying myself and hopefully enable my PP's to enjoy their game too, so who cares if I'm rubbish, I don't earn my living golfing thank goodness or I would be starving.

I've never really thought about it. I am what I am. I've always thought there no point in putting extra pressure on yourself by creating an unrealistic expectation.

I enjoy golf and the company, companionship and banter it provides.

My middle handicap would suggest that I'm OK at it. My own view (particularly when considering my current form) is that I'm pretty pants, but the one thing I'm sure about is that without playing it then my life would be so much emptier.

The beauty of golf is that we can all have our day in the limelight irrespective of our actual skill level.

Yes. I play off 6. I've got to that through hard work, application and practice. I am much lower than the national average.
I may not play to my handicap all the time, but I know I can beat my handicap as well...so you know what, yes, I am a good golfer

If you can go round 18 holes not taking 7,8,9 shots per hole you are probably better than 95% of the population. I have friends who say they play golf, but only go on the range and if they went on a course they would most likely be asked to leave 😏

I agree with the the above if you can go round without 8s and 9s on the card on every hole your not a bad golfer

i went round other day in 107 on a course I never played before. Hit 8 bogies and missed at least 4 other bogey putts making it a double bogey

if you can get round without looking like your hacking your way around your not a bad golfer. My playing partner was playing off 5 and commented I shouldn't be playing off 28 I should be 18 or below the way I was driving and good second shots. Was just the putting that let me down that day

I would say that I'm a very good Amatuer golfer - I think if you are cat 1 you are in the top 5% in the country

That to me means you are very good

Scratch or better is excellent - top level Amatuer

5-9 - good golfer
10-16 Decent
16-20 - ok
20-28 - could improve

It's all relative, isn't it? Your own view of how good you are is informed by how good you think you could be. By other people's reckoning, using the gaps set out above, I guess I'd be considered a decent golfer.

But do I think I'm any good? Not really, no. I'd call myself fairly poor.

I think the bench mark is a breaking 100. I'll happily play with someone who can do that. Getting it round I would call it.
Good is 18 and lower. Pretty good is 10 and lower.
I'm lucky enough that my practice swing plays off scratch so no problems here😗

If you have to reduce your score at the end of a round by taking your handicap off.........you ain't good.
