Are you any good?

My view on this is probably skewed due to spending quite a bit of time around national squad players and in an environment full of low single digits where I was one of the worst players. I'm "alright, I suppose"

It's very much relative. At club level, yes I'm good. When I play at intercounty events I'm just about OK and when I play in a national competition I am rubbish.

I think the lower your handicap gets the more realistic you become about how difficult it is to be a truly good golfer.

It depends on which part of my game you're asking about.

Driving. Very good
Irons. Ok
Chipping. Good
Putting. You sure you play golf???????????

Compared to a tour pro we are all rubbish. I don't think you can pigeon hole by handicap. A few of the old boys I play with are off 20+ and can't hit the ball that far, but they used to play of 2/3 handicap back in the day of persimmon and balata.....I could never bring myself to call them poor golfers.

Its all relative
I think that if you enjoy the game, enjoy the scenery, enjoy the banter, enjoy the challenge, are aware of other players and the etiquette of the game, then you are a good golfer irrespective of the number of shots you take to get round.

My name is Fragger, I can be rubbish at Golf, But I am still a good Golfer

If I am asked the question, I usually say I'm OK or not bad. Some one off scratch will think I am poor but someone off 20 will probably think I am good.

If you have to reduce your score at the end of a round by taking your handicap off.........you ain't good.

Spot on.
When I ask people their score I expect a scratch one.
Golfers who reply in net terms are deluded.
'I was two over today' is in reality a score of 102 for some.

Even when I was low single figures I would never say I was good.....decent was my reply then.

I like this question when it comes round and I probably change my response each time as well. It's so difficult to answer as our own viewpoint is skewed by so many perceptions. Ultimately, if you get round regularly to 18 hcp or better, appreciate the rules and etiquette of the game and enjoy yourself within a group - you're good. If you're single figures or better and do the same you're very good.

Playing off 18 I don't consider myself very good.
But good enough to enjoy playing the game.
So I'm happy with that.

I can play shots just as good as those off single figures (off 16) and lower, just not as often.

I play bad shots just like those off single figures, but more often and generally more destructive ...

I would say that I'm a very good Amatuer golfer - I think if you are cat 1 you are in the top 5% in the country

That to me means you are very good

Scratch or better is excellent - top level Amatuer

5-9 - good golfer
10-16 Decent
16-20 - ok
20-28 - could improve

Youre CAT1 LP? It's so unlike you to talk about it...

I'm the best 14 handicapper in the UK, and when I go back up to 15 shortly, I'll be the best 15 handicapper in the country...😂😂

Some of the answers on here suggest that to be "good" you need to play off scratch, or Cat 1. That's ridiculous in my opinion.

If everyone compared themselves to the very best at a particular activity and that was the benchmark of being "good", only 1 -2 % of the population would actually be good at anything. Which is just a silly way of defining what it is to be "good".

If "ok" is the median, which in golfing terms is what, 18 for club golfers? Then below that is a sliding scale starting at ok and going towards good (which is probably reached at about Cat 2?) and below that the scale slides from good to very good to exceptional.

It's easy to lose sight of what is or isn't good when the people you compare yourself with are equally as good or better.

Excellent golfer - invites you to his course as a visitor, first to the bar, polite, humourous, patient and excellent etiquette.
Good golfer - arranges games, does the scoring, good fun to be with and has been known to buy a round.
Average - usually available to make up a game, buys the tea at the halfway Hut, is good at finding your ball in the rough (because he practices by hitting his in the rough a lot) and has a good range of golf jokes.
Poor golfer - cries off with weak excuses, usually last to arrive, changes in the car park and expects someone else to have sorted out the green fees. Has a series of standard phrases which he trots out at any opportunity (where did that come from, that's got snow on it, I never shank...) and will half heartedly offer to buy the last round - but is more likely to have to have it pointed out that it's his turn. Thinks 5 hours is a quick round and usually has some sandwiches in his bag as he's always in a rush (except on the course).
Bad golfer - I'll leave this to others to define.

It is all relative to your own standard and who you play with.

A 1 handicap will not tell you he is VERY GOOD as he will no doubt be the donkey in the group at bigger am events where 1 is the highest handicap allowed.

A 14 handicapper might say he is GOOD as he plays with guys in the low 20s

I was a 3 handicap, i do not think 2 is very good as I know i was never very good and the difference between 2 and 3 aint much, to me plus 1 is very good and plus 3 is excellent (There are pros remember who would crush these guys)

I consider 5 to be nothing special at all whereas a 15 handicapper will nearly always describe that golfer as good

CAT 1 is no great shakes and IMO its a far cry from being able to describe yourself as VERY GOOD.... i was always QUITE GOOD at golf, if asked, I am keen and play ok..

Flashback

Actually i was asked this a lot as I hit the ball pretty far and my response was often, i COULD BE GOOD, if i could hit it straighter and judge my approaches. Asked often what I play off and this is my reaction to that question

All depends on your perception and who you play with really. The people I play with on a regular basis are in the 0-3hcp range which makes me crap but I'm better than most of you weekend warriors :ears:

:D
