Yes unfortunately it seems that VHS not only are a thing of the past, but seemingly redundant also. We got rid of all of ours a few years ago. For anyone with a large collection, I recommend filtering through it - anything that can easily be picked up on DVD etc., just chuck it. For special tapes, you could try converting them to DVD/computer files. We did our wedding tapes and stuff our parents had using MAGIX's video to DVD converter. Overall it is relatively easy, but tedious. There are loads of places who convert them now though, I even saw a poster in my local Boots!
There might be some Hipsters interested in using them for art projects though
