Used to be great collecting all the 'Only Fools and Horses' tapes, along with other TV series, films, football etc, but now due to the growth and accessibility of the internet, and unlike other items that can become collectable, are VHS tapes simply now worthless?

I put some football tapes on the bay and they didn't even get an opening bid of 0.99p  I have bloody hundreds of various tapes, complete collections and more....I tried to take some to the charity shop and they refused them

Are they just destined for the bin, seems such a shame that nobody or any organisation couldn't benefit from them :mmm:

Yes Pretty much worthless had same expierience when trying to thin out the cupboards. it's also quite hard to find a player these days to view them.

I could sell them a VHS recorder, Buy the recorder and get 100 tapes free

They are too big, delicate and low quality. Most things that were on VHS are available on DVD so they are not even collectable... at a guess.

Its just going to feel so criminal throwing so many out, some are still in cellophane and have never been played and yet are still unwanted

Yup, I had a complete collection of Ryder Cups on VHS from 1985 to 2002. Loved them, Brookline, Oak Hill, Valderama and the Belfry etc Picture quality was pants though. Wanted to put them on DVD and couldn't work out how - so still gathering dust or perished in the loft!

I guess even talking about media that not even DVD will live on, it will all be in the cloud or on the likes of Sky+ boxes and ipods, i e it will not be physical at all.

Look on the bright side Robin......at least you didn't buy Betamax........

I've just cleared out a cupboard in our study- full of music cassette tapes and VHS tapes- neither of which we possess the equipment to play them on.
I suspect Mr Mimms will still not want me to throw them out...

I think what might have some value in future times would be when you have taped not just the programme - but the fillers, trailers and, from ITV, the ads. Can't see any film or programme having any value at all since the dawn of the age of video coincided with the realisation that we'd chucked away so much from the 50s, 60s and 70s - and so much more care was taken.

Cassettes - probably only going to hold on to those that I recorded off the radio as it's not stuff readily findable on the interweb. Everything else I'll archive (stick in a deep corner of the loft) or bin.

Video on the VHS tapes came from 1080p HD and was 'dumbed down' for the mass market boxes.

This is why you can now get a Blu-Ray of a 1970's movie (not the TV shows unfortunately as TV Cameras weren't as sophisticated as movie cameras)

so yes, they are worthless.............before throwing them out however, ask at the local nursing homes as the residents there all grew up with VHS and the shows are relevant also.

the earliest similarity to torrent copying:whistle:

Have to admit I have several boxfuls of Betamax tapes.... Herself keeps eyeing them up for disposal so I am forced into vigorously defending them... She'll get her way eventually... She always does :(...
