The title of this thread makes me sick 
You do know that the pros spend a long time practising bunker shots.....
It wouldn't be so bad going in a bunker if there were a decent layer of sand to get out from.
what I object to is more often than not there is insufficient sand in the bunkers and you are left with grainy mud to try and extract your ball from, coupled with the fact that it is called a bunker and as such you cannot ground the club in the grainy mud so your chances of getting the ball out in one shot are very slim.
The pros would not have to deal with this kind of lie in the first place but we amateurs face this on a regular basis.
To keep the thread on track, yes, they are and should remain obstacles on the course but well maintained ones!!
