I just remember the early days of Ipods when people were getting mugged when toerags saw the distinctive white earphones.

Probably just an overt paranoia bred from me being a bit of a country bumpkin but I would not feel comfortable in the middle of alot of cities with £500 of desireable and easily nickable kit on show.

I'd need to understand more about this whole movie thing before getting one. After wasting hours converting some DVD's, and making them the right format, importing them to iTunes. Some of them wouldn't play on the iPhone. Format not supported or something flashed up. And I'm not going to buy them again on iTunes. Not now that I already have a hard copy on DVD.

I'd be tempted by the wifi only version though.

I don't commute on public transport and would mainly be used for all the media stuff around the house. Which admittedly I can do with a laptop, but what a faff they are for that.

yeah but DVD is a redundant format now matey...might be time to bit the bullet and start converting all your old dvd's like you had to when with old cd's/vinyl or download em again pre-converted....

I'm not even going to argue...well, maybe a little.
I may as well just "get with it" and throw out all my cds and dvds to be hip and cool.
I'm converting nothing. What's the point.....to watch a dvd once every two years?

It's not the same as an album ripped onto an mp3 player.

I work in the music business, if I started ripping all my CDs now to itunes or windows, I'd still be doing it in 2014.
If I want to hear a track from a 1992 rock album, I'll pull it off the shelf.

If I want to listen to it everyday, it's on my mp3 player.
I don't want to watch the same film day after day, so why waste time and energy doing so.

^ it's not mandatory, just a suggestion.

the concept of owning music and or film is going to be redundant very soon. as long as you can watch/listen to it when you want ot, do you actually need to own a physcial product...

You know, I've been thinking about this all day.

This is what would make me buy an ipad....

OK, apple sell a DVD drive which plugs directly into the ipad via USB or something. You turn the thing on, there is a "one-click" option to convert/rip/file and it's done.

Simples. They make even more money, I get DVDs put straight into the storage drive, the DRM sorts itself out on my behalf....everyone's a winner!

Can you imagine how slow that would be?
The dvdrom would need an external power source too as the ipad would struggle to power itself and the drive.

That's a shame. I thought I'd cracked it!

I wouldn't know about such things. Any external devices I use are powered via the usb from the computer. If the ipad was charging at the time, I'd half hoped it might really work.
