Appeal against speeding fine

Speaking of cameras. Just passed an unmarked hiding in a junction off a dual carriageway with a small handheld device.

No identifying marks, no hi-vis colours anywhere. Seems a bit dodgy to me. If that’s what they are resorting to then it has to be nothing more than a cash grab.
One like that on the Prescot by pass almost every day.
Just as you get over a hill there’s a hand held in a lay by no warnings.

I was told once that two out of three speed cameras have no device in them to record just a flash.
Unless it’s a goldmine for tickets.

I’d really hope that wasn’t speed enforcement. The party line is that it isn’t about money, it’s about road safety, but it’s hard to raise that as an argument if sneaky tactics like that are being employed.

Surely if you are conforming to the speed limit there should be no issue.

Alternatively it could be argued that they're going to catch people driving " normally"..ie 40 in a 30 rather than not catching those who have seen the signs and slowed and got on the gas as soon as they're clear of the area.

Could it possibly be local do gooders grabbing number plate so a warning letter is sent by the poilice?

Not really something I’ve ever heard of, if I’m honest.

As I say, the whole ethos of speed management should really be a primary focus on road safety. The bad old days of police hiding behind trees and bus shelters should be long gone.

Covert speed enforcement is absolutely something I would have never become involved with.

How would that work ? Surely you cant just go out by a speed gun and start reporting people 🤣

Locals get trained and given speed guns who then pass number plates on to the local force to send out warnings on speed.

Certainly not something my old Force ever got involved with. But the schemes I was aware of weren’t covert as described.

Only time I’ve come across the public with speed guns is when they’re trying to get some speed bumps in the village. Happened at a place near me a few years back, there were people with hi vis and speed cameras clocking people going through their village. 6 months later speed bumps got installed. It must have been related 🤷🏻‍♂️

I saw it on TV. It seemed to be the local village nerders doing it to slow traffic down, and the local force went along with it happy to send out warning letters.

Is it really ?

Seems like something that could go horribly wrong

There was a fake speed camera put up in a local village , caused cars to brake sharply which in turn caused an accident

Intentions maybe good but potentially could cause more issues

Leave it to the police etc
It's an initiative called community speed watch, locals in high Vis vests with a speed display board, you can get a stern letter but little else.

If it caused an accident, people WERE travelling to fast.
