I'd be interested. But time wise, weekends would be better. Cost wise, I hate to sound tight but cheaper is better, as by the time fuel is taken into account, I can't justify paying more than £20 to £30 for a round, and it seems the more you pay for a round of golf, the more difficult the course becomes, and the more balls I loose.

To summerise.

Cheap, weekend, not to far to travel, easy course, (well no heather to carry etc off the tee, Crowbourough anyone!)

Is anyone going to take charge (I'm not in a position to domestically at present) and get a date and venue tied down so we can play before we all have to start thinking about Christmas (visiting family, shopping etc)

How about Chartham Park near East Grinstead on the Sussex/Surrey border?
About 20 minutes from the M23 (Gatwick)..

http://www.theclubcompany.com/clubs/Chartham-Park/golf-18-hole.html#jumpToContent

It's over an hours drive for me too so I'm not being crafty!

Nice course, some testing holes and quite a few with water.

Or Copthorne Golf Club?
Literally 5 minutes off the M23 (Gatwick again).
Really nice, well established parkland course which usually holds up to the wet weather quite well.

I've played it quite a few times and have only ever seen one temporary green

How come you Southerners get loads wanting to play and us Northern boys struggle to get 4?
It can't be down to tightness, i'm a Yorkshireman through and through but don't mind paying for a decent track however when we've tried it's like pulling teeth..... Painful

But just imagine if it was pigeon or whippet racing.

We'd be left out in the cold
;)

How about next Summer booking up 24 of us (12 Southerners/12 Northerners) to play a "Ryder Cup" type event.
Loads of places with cheap hotels etc.

That would be a laugh (especially in the bar in the evening)
;) ;) ;)

We did try this a few months ago, Maybe next year with some advance planning, a set date and a decent venue.

Not sure it would be 12 vs 12
More like 12 vs 4 but hey i'm up for 3 rounds in a day

I'm happy with either but would need to cadge a lift from someone unless we base it more around the Surrey/Berks border. I thought we were initially looking to include Wiltshire and possibly Hampshire based members which would mean a fair old trek for them. Not trying to be pedantic just voicing my opinion

Fully understand and appreciate the comment Homer.
I just mentioned them to get the ball rolling...nobody seemed prepared to pick it up by the short & curlies and recommend anywhere!
Problem I have is that I live right down on the Sussex Coast so somewhere in Wilts/Hampshire means a fair old trot for me too! I was trying to think of somewhere where we would all have just over an hours journey (if that's possible) lol!
Still, in for a penny

Hey guys, I'm from wiltshire and would be happy to travel as it is a rare occassion (thanks for the observation though homer!)

If I have enough time to arrange work commitments it would make for a nice day out...would be good if we could maybe have a chill out after rather than just hoping back onto the motorway!

Does anyone want to throw a date out and get some confirmations??? I would but am rubbish at organising stuff and not to familiar with the areas mentioned!

Looking at the responses, there are a lot of interested forumers who live in South Essex, Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hants, Berks, Middx, etc.

All seem to be within about 1 - 1 1/2 hours drive of M25 and M23 or M3 junction. Chartham Park is a good track but a long way off M25 (time wise). There are a lot of public courses in the area e.g. Tilgate Forest, Hoebridge, Silvermere, et al, although at weekends would be quite busy.

Copthorne, Mannings Heath, ?????? Redhill and Reigate - short but interesting....

You've also got Cottesmore GC which is literally the next exit down the M23 from Gatwick at Pease Pottage. M25/M23 should be fairly quiet if we made it a Sunday????
I played it many, many years ago when I was hacking around and it didn't seem too bad.
£33.00 green fee on a Sunday according to their website and tee times are bookable online.
http://www.cottesmoregolf.co.uk/

They have two courses, the "Griffin" and the "Pheonix" but the Griffin gets the better write ups of the two, being longer and more suited to the "better" golfer. Apparantly it hosted the Sussex Open in 2006 so it shouldn't be too shabby.

Let's face it. We're not going to get Wentworth or Sunningdale for £33.00 at the week-end!

Just checked the Cottesmore site and tried to book a round on the Griffin for this Sunday (just to check the booking system)....only times I could get were 16.00 onwards!!

So a quick warm up and one, maybe two holes??

Not looking great as you can only book up to a week in advance

How about "Old Thorns" in Hampshire?

http://www.oldthorns.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=100&Itemid=33

They have a number of deals on at the moment for midweek play, the "Oak" package looks reasonable, 18 holes (including a buggy which you will need here believe me) with the "Chefs Special" at £75.00 per pair (£37.50 each)....
Don't think that offer is available on a Sunday but I could make a few enquiries if enough were interested?
Rob

Edit. Just seen they do a "winter warmer fourball special" which is available at week-ends. Coffee on arrival, 18 holes and chefs special afterwards. £119.00 per fourball so that's £30.00 each!! Buggie would be extra on top, and having played here a couple of times I would recommend it, it's a bloody leggy course. But it has all the makings of a good meet if it's handy for everybody. I'm willing to give somebody a lift down there as long as I'm not pushed too far out of my way.
