I'm a couple of chapters in and I can barely put it down long enought to type this.
I knew these people were persecuted, but it's horrifying to read the details.

I read this several years ago. It's one of the classics of Western history as opposed to the faction that has been pushed out for years.
Might I suggest Crazy Horse and Custer (Stephen E Ambrose - same guy who wrote Band of Eagles). Fascinating contrast of the two who were of a similar age.
The only thing I will say is that Custer would have been at home with the WW1 generals in that he got more of his own killed than he ever did of the enemy.
