One of my finest golf memories was in a Scramble Open. Team of 4, handicaps 7, 9, 10 and 16. Was back in 2013, so long before WHS.
Par 68 course, with 6 Par 3'ss and 2 Par 5's. We scored 2 4's, which were our worst scores. The we had 14 3's, a 2 and a 1 (on the nearest the pin hole as well), for a gross 53 (15 under). With a handicap of 4.1 to take off that, we won handsomely. And, rightly so. It was a once in a lifetime display. We were all on a crest of a wave, and were in constant awe as things kept going our way. We were already 4 under after 5, then had a hole in one on the 6th. The 7th was a long par 4, and we sank a putt that must have been 50 foot long. Walk onto the Par 3 8th, and the 7 handicapper hits a tee shot that ends up about 3 inches from the hole. Birdie short Par 4 9th, to go 9 under after 9. The back 9 was an anticlimax in comparison, only 6 under. That included a long eagle putt on the par 5. Pars on 15, 16 and 17th brought us back down to earth, but finished with a birdie on the last.
P.S I know all this because I had a facebook memory yesterday showing me a picture of the scorecard.
Had this round occurred after WHS, I'd be less confident of winning. Sure, our nett score would be better, as we'd get more shots. But, it probably only needs a team of 3 or 4 very high handicappers to shoot a few under par to tie or beat us.
I still like a Scramble, as a bit of a fun day out, no stress about the horror shots you hit. But, the fun in competing is no longer there, as you genuinely feel you need to have a once in a lifetime round to even stand a chance. Either that, or just load your team with high handicappers, so you can just take the shots off at the end, rather than worry about trying to save them on the course.
