Reason I ask is that I was speaking to somebody today who flatly refuses to change. He said he will carry on using it both in bounce-games and comps and couldn't care less.

He said that at his standard it doesn't mater what he has in his hands so sod it. His attitude was basically "disqualify me then."

Had to be one of the most cynical people I have ever met as he swaers blind that the rule change is simply a mass-ploy between the governing bodies and manufacturers to force people to spend money.

Personally, I thought he was daft.

He's more than daft, he's now a golf cheat - a stigma which is very hard, nigh impossible to get rid of....stupid man!

Well said birdieman, well said. I am a stickler for the rules and think that any true golfer should be also. Disobeying the rules is just disrespect for the game in my eyes.

Right about the stigma, once somebody is outed as a cheat I think that it will never go away, he will struggle to get a game and then before he knows it he will be looking for a new club and a clean slate hopefully.

Does he get disqualififed from his competitions? I'd hate to think that individual clubs are deliberately disobeying the new rule. He sounds like the sort of person I wouldn't want in a competition anyway, regardless of him changing his Driver. He sounds like an idiot to me.

we have a couple of people in our club still using illegal drivers, they have been told and we have put up a list of illegal drivers on the notice boards but because of peoples relunctance to change  we now have a couple of members boycotting the monthly medal on principle until this is sorted out. Hopefully this won't last much longer and people will start abiding by the rules as I think it only aids in destroying club morale.

the old Cobra Composite drivers go effing miles past my f speed driver so if someone is using one they got an unfair advantage over me. He should not use it!

For recreational golf where you play against your mates for a laugh or out on your own then use any club for your own pleasure,

As soon as money comes into play..competitions etc.....THEY ARE ILLEGAL!

Barb, these people have known about the rule change for 2 years, it is not a sudden announcement - I have no sympathy at all for your boycotters, have they not read the club noticeboard or have a clue about what has been going on in the world of golf....for the last 2 years? If they won't conform then they are cheating and need to be banned from competition club morale or no club morale.

If people are boycotting the change becuase of cost they are morons. You can get a fantastic conforming driver for as little as £30 2nd hand, something that will more than capably do the job.

It is members who are legal who are boycotting against people who are illegal. We in the process now of checking drivers as people enter comps and if they are illegal they are not allowed to enter, if they manage to get through they are disqualified if we find out.

Hi, I'm new on here so be gentle with me! ;)
I played in our first club comp on Sunday and noticed that one of my playing partners was using what I thought was an illegal driver, he was having a stormer as well. I was marking his card and told him of my concerns and he said he'd been told it was ok. Long story short, we spoke to the Comp Sec after the round and there was two versions of his driver, thankfully his was the conforming version and his net 66 stood, good enough to win. I've never been more happy to be wrong. :)

Wildrover, welcome onto the forum pal. This whole debate is a no brainer. The people who use these sticks are breaking the rules just the same as the pals who sign false 'twos' for each other and b'stards who can't count a score card but if they get short changed 10p at the bar they are as sharp as a tack. It is cheating.... Full stop (or should that be FOOLS STOP)

It is cheating pure and simple. However our new friend (welcome by the way Wildrover) does pose an interesting point. Would you actually have the balls to grass somebody up. I know the moral thing to do particularly in competitions, is to ensure that everyone starts on a level playing field but what happens as in the case of medwayjohn when somebody point blankly refuses to change.

Do you create a fuss and risk becoming stigmatised as a trouble maker within your club. What happens if the bloke causes a huge fuss? What happens if your committee aren't strong enough to stand up and enforce the rules. It is after all supposed to be a game for us (we aren't pros) and we all get enough grief in our daily lives. Would it really be worth getting more over this.

I have to say I admire the members at Barb's club although I do feel in some way they are cutting off their nose by not playing until the problem is sorted especially as they are compliant. Surely an approach to the competition committee en mass would be more effective.

What about Medwayjon's guy. Is he going to be outed to the committee and prevented from playing or will his competition partners quietly sweep it under the carpet.

Let me make it crystal clear. We have known about it for several years. There are sufficient models of driver on the market place at the budget end that will provide sufficient performance for the majority of golfers making it easily affordable (you had two years to save up!). There are no excuses and it quite simply is cheating. My point is where do you draw the line.

Users of illegal drivers should be disqualified-using these sticks is cheating end of story no ifs or buts.

Club committees should be more proactive in policing the rule and enforcing the rule.

We all knew the change was coming down the track and should have planned accordingly.

We have all probably come across a rule we don't agree with, mine is having to take a penalty drop out of a flooded bunker, but as golfers we should abide by the rules.

If a somebody doesn't want to play by the rules they should find another sport.

Welcome to the forum golfer1.

My view on this one is that a hazard is a hazard be it a bunker or water. You have only yourself to blame for being there. If you are in a water hazard you can either play it as it lies or drop out under penalty. Why do you want a different rule for a flooded bunker? It's still a hazard. At least you have the option of a free drop from standing water in the bunker if available.
