We have all probably come across a rule we don't agree with, mine is having to take a penalty drop out of a flooded bunker, but as golfers we should abide by the rules.

If a somebody doesn't want to play by the rules they should find another sport.

Exactly. Just because you dont agree with a rule doesnt mean you can just ignore it. These guys with illegal drivers are cheating and they know they are. Im fairly knew to golf, been playing a year, but one of its attractions is the honesty and trust invloved. Im not a member of a club, but dont clubs have procedures if people persistently break the rules?

Whilst I agree with the enforcement of the rule and that using an illegal driver is cheating, what are peoples views as to the success of the rule change. At a club level it appears that most people can find a driver that actually goes further than their old illegal one as technology has advanced in other areas. Makes you think what the point was in the first place.

Homer J poses the dilemma there. As soon as I noticed the Driver (which wasn't until the 17th tee) I knew I had to report it so it could be checked. It is your duty to the rest of the field playing in the comp. As I say, so glad I was wrong, but if I wasn't how many more comps would he have played in before it was flagged up, at least now he is certain that his is a conforming club. I must make it clear that he didn't think it was illeagal and was trying to get away with it, he thought it was legal and it was me who had a doubt. The happy ending is he won the comp and is going to the regional finals with our pro, and good luck to 'em.

In you case wildrover ithad a happy outcome. My concerns come when the bloke goes of the deep end and becomes abusive/aggressive or begins a whispering campaign in the clubhouse that makes your visits to the club less enjoyable.

We all have an obligation to play within the rules and police our playing partners (in the nicest way possible) to do likewise but I am sure like medwayjon found that there will be people who will not turn in their illegal clubs knowing full well clubs aren't going to force the rules competitvely or if they make enough noise and bluster they can move the spotlight off the fact they have cheated

August 2002 was when the proposed outlawing of the illegal drivers was first brought to our attention. We had over 5 years to get this right.

How many of us have exactly the same clubs in our bags now as we had in Aug 2002 ? I don't even have the same bag!

We were well informed, the problem was that as manufacturers tried to offload their stocks of illegal drivers, the shops bought them up and in an effort to get rid of them, the shops dropped their prices. many people bought drivers which were going to be illegal but would do until then. I have a friend who has just gone through this. He bought from AG during a new year sale and played with it for 4 years. Best driver he ever had he says. Now, well its not legal so he's had to get another one.

If the driver in the shop was "a good deal" there was a reason behind it wasn't there! Only in the last year or so did shops clearly mark stuff as 2008 compliant... wonder why it took them so long ?
