Went to the range tonight and started with the wedges as usual and worked my way through the set..... Only brought the irons as there still in the honeymoon phase.....
When i put the ball back in my stance as opposed to its normal position i started hitting them more solidly and nearly all had a lovely straight penetrating ball flight.....
I also tried this on the course last weekend and i was taking light divots with all my irons.....

Is this a wise thing to do....Play the ball at the same position for all clubs or am i just masking a problem elsewhere in my swing?

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

There's about 1000 ways to answer that question. It's both right and wrong.

The right part: It doesn't matter where you have the ball in your stance as long as the ball does exactly what you want it to when you hit it..... do that all the time and we'll be seeing you on the TV :)

Some players have the ball forward in their stance and some have it further back... it's a variable. As long as the club is repeatedly getting to the ball in the same place everytime, it's going in the right direction and the right distance then that's the important things covered.

The wrong part: Who cares? ;) ;) ;)

Nice reply J..... :D :D :D
Suppose its each and everyone to there own at the end of the day!
What works for one player doesnt necessarily work for another.....
I just seemed to be hitting them more solid.

It's not easy to explain why it could be wrong as it might well be the right thing for you and you go on to win 15 majors provided it always remains working that way.

As soon as you start duffing it someone will say that you need to move the ball forward... without question.

I think it's possibly helping you to keep your weight forward at impact (so you hit with a descending blow). If you could replicate this with the ball more centered/forward then you're onto a winner.... and it'll be a lot easier to hit 3-irons! :)

If it works out ill employ you as my coach and caddy :D :D :D

Everyone has a point in their swing where the face returns square it's just a matter of finding that position in Your swing. It may be forward or back, just as you have done experiment is the way to find it. Too far forward you may draw the ball, too far back push it. When you find the straight shot shape consistently that is your place.
