Any metal detectorists on here?

As per the thread title, does anyone on here go metal detecting?

My kids have recently expressed an interest in trying it out. We've borrowed a very basic/cheap detector from Mrs Colch's brother just to see how they got on. We've been to the local beach and spent a few hours there and they enjoyed it. Tested it at home with some coins and it has a detection range of around 4 to 5 inches max.

We're now looking to buy a decent metal detector but have no idea where to start. Prices seem to go from less than £100 to over £1000. Would like something that could be used on the beach and also in fields and with a decent detection range. Has anyone got any recommendations of decent mid-range detectors and also any tips or hints on places to go once we get one?

Been dipping in and out of the hobby for years and have found some great stuff.
There are plenty local clubs that run organised digs which can save hunting for permission and can also help with info and learning.
I use a Garrett AT pro which has been a fantastic machine but there are certainly loads to choose from.
Digging around on a detectorists forum will give you a better idea of what each machine can do and what’s popular.
