Full Service History, Make sure timing-belt has been changed according to age/miles.

ALWAYS, WITHOUT FAIL, VERIFY THE HISTORY - So many cars have fictitious elements to their service history. How hard is it for someone to get a micky-mouse stamp made? A car dealer I know has main-dealer stamps for every firm in kent in a drawer. If you ring Audi customer services they can detail any servicing done to the vehicle in the audi network.

Dont buy a modified example, if it has been dicked about with it decreases value and can invalidate warranty.

Check that all gadgets like the bose system work.

The aluminium work inside the TT is expensive to replace so if it is in poor condition, walk away, as with the interior as a whole, if it isnt A1 it can be an indication of how the rest of the car has been treated.

Check the sills and underside, these are a low-car and can suffer with scrapes to the metal-work underneath or have sills that have been punched in.

On test drive, boot it under load and look in the mirror for any white/blue tinged smoke, it will be a shagged turbo if it is noticable.

The VW/Audi group 1.8 20V Turbo lump suffers with sludging in the sump which in turns frigs the oil pump. Provided the car has been serviced according to schedule with fully synthetic oil it should be ok but check the condition of the oil and history for a pump change.

Check for body repairs. So many of these have been stuffed so if they have had paint, make sure it is done to a show-room standard.

Also, make sure you get a great warranty with a TT.

Thats about it.

Don't get a puncture.

If you get a space-saver spare (and many TT's don't) the full size wheel wont fit in the space and may not fit in the boot either. So if you're carrying a passenger you have a toss-up as to who/what you're going to leave at the side of the road.
