Any cheap desktop deals around

Since when is 1Tb Disk Drive appropriate for a 'browsing, online shopping and emails' user!

W8 is debatable, but ya takes what yer given - and 'Classic' works pretty well

As I posted...Out of balance! Shrink the HDD size; Up the processor power for a few quid more (199 is a psychological price pointso it will really only be a few - like 219) and Robert's yer Mum's brother.

Btw. Ebuyer has a pretty similar spec box for considerably less and better spec-ed ones for less too!

Hard drive standard sizing has gone to a terrabyte these days, its just a given for desktops. With mobile phones and cameras taking 16mp and larger pics, thats just the way home pc storage has went.
For what its worth, I wouldnt have a spindle drive in any of my machines these days, a 128gb SSD drive is around 50 quid and makes more of a difference to everyday use than a processor or more ram would. :)

With you on that, but remember that we (or at least you) are talking basic/minimal configuration. Personally, I'd want a DVD Drive, but wouldn't care about too much storage - I use 30Gb of my 300Gb drive! My chip is very slow by current measurement and struggles on graphics, with no scope for real improvement. But that replacement box (only) looks better balanced imo - and marginally cheaper.

I would even have suggested a 'No Operating System' box, but definitely worth 'upgrading' from XP as it's no longer supported.

Think my need for a new one is getting dire as the PC this morning has somehow partly reset itself. Luckily I'd backed up all photo's the other week but hadn't sorted through emails and they all appear to have gone.

Btw. This might not mean the PC is knackered. Could well be worth getting the opinion of someone who knows the ins/outs better.

Simply saying 'time for a new box' could be a cop-out, though possibly sensible as well!

Fragger?

There is no point in spending a wad of cash on a 9 year old PC,
It sounds like a windows corruption/ hard drive degradation issue, which is going to cost more to repair than the value of the machine. ( reformat plus maybe new hard drive)

So cut your losses would be my advice , but a word of warning.
Do not be price led as you will end up buying a donkey, get a set of minimum specs in your head and find those specs at the best price.

An intel I3 3xxx ( third generation) 4gb ram , 500gb hard drive is the absolute minimum I would look at personally

when you get it delivered, you will find Windows 8 is a bit different ( understatement of the year)

if you put "Classic Shell" into Google, you can download the free Classic shell program which will give you the start button and full menus and program list as you have at the moment.

Thanks all:) Ended up ordering one for HID as well:rofl:

Oh, and he's now decided we're having new monitors so any help on that appreciated. Again budget end please.

I would say as a general rule, you should only get a screen with speakers if you have absolutely no room for speakers
The sound quality is poor and tinny, If you are going to watch catch up TV then id avoid built in

This cheap sound bar might be an option http://www.ebuyer.com/657666-xenta-monitor-2-0ch-soundbar-ebbr-2y0

or you can get a half decent 2 speaker set for £20

No doubt you will know better than me as I think you are some sort of computer guy reading some posts?
Anyway, my take on this (could be wrong so a more informed reply may help):-

The linked PC has 8.1. I think this already has a 'classic shell' installed and you can flick between 'Windows 7 & 8 layout' by the touch of a button?
I do not have W8 (or 8.1) but have been looking at a laptop for my daughters Christmas. I am sure my terrible memory tells me that was one of the main changes for 8.1?
A little clarification / advice may help.
