Well, I was kinda expecting it.

The business was sold by it's previous owners, and the new owners have made me join the growing list on folks looking for a job. I'm now redundant with immediate effect.

Got abosolutly trollied in a very short space of time last night, consequently the game didn't go very well this morning.

 :(

Sorry to hear that mate. Not sure what line you are in but HID has been looking for HR and general office work since Christmas Eve. Had a 2nd interview for one job (didn't get it) and two other first interviews and that is it despite writing to over 150 local companies and signing on with loads of agencies. Not even any temp work onthe books.

She gets her final payment next week so we are ok until the end of February but not sure what we will do from March if she can't find anything. Even Sainsbury's and Tescos aren't recruiting (even for night staff)

Keep searching and keep your spirits up. At least there will be some free time to get on the course and down the range. Hope you find something soon

Hapless - sorry to hear that and FWIW I am in the same boat...

Are they actually allowed to do that though?

Sorry to hear that as well.

It all just sucks at the moment. 2nd kid due in April and I turn 40 next month. Looks like we'll have to take the house off the market (having paid for a damn HIP a little while ago), and make do here.

Ah well. One door shouts, another opens.

Feel for you mate. I went through it 3 times in the early 90's. Even retrained into gov't supported work and then they even pulled the plug on that.

Keep plugging away and keep your pecker up (in a manner of speaking :))

I am very sorry for you hapless, I wouldnt wish that on anyone in this current climate, Im genuinely sorry.

Driving home some 35 miles tonight I noticed how many for sale signs were up in just the last month, not only that but the number of cars in driveways with a for sale on them, a bloody huge number compared to what I would usually see and talking to some of my friends I think there is a lot more harshness to come for the bulk of this year, I have one or two family members in very good earning jobs and positions and they tell me things could snap overnight, if I dared mention where one works some might be surprised.
Too serious an issue for gossip though.

You have my full sympathy Hapless. Went through it last June and would not wish it on anyone. As i work in residential and commercial conveyancing I really thought that it was the end for me in the legal profession but found a new job just as the money was about to start running out. Have to say that I am far happier in this job than in the old one. The aim now is just to survive this year and hope for a better 2010. The only advice is to try and stay positive as opportunities do come eventually.

On a side note, one of the reasons I think that it was harder to find a job was the ridiculous fees charged by the recruitment agencies. Most legal positions are recruited through agencies and they charge the firm several thousand pounds to find applicants. In the current climate, what firm is going to look to pay that expense on top of wages.

Hapless, sorry to hear that mate. It's a real s*****r when something like this happens. Am about to go through the same myself - finish at end of month.

Keep your chin up and always remember that there will be something out there, often better than you have been doing.

Good luck mate

Am just about to find myself in the same boat. Have been served redundancy notice and have my final meeting on Tuesday morning. I run the estate agency department in a solicitors office and it's not a great time to be an estate agent, that's for sure! :(

To add to the mix, my wife is on maternity leave just now, but we probably have enough money put by to keep us going for a couple of months or so. After that - who knows? :(

Anyway, all the best in your own search.

Thanks everyone. It's sadening to see it happen to so many people. At a guess we have 40 or so regulars on here, and with others on this thread and others over the last few months, I wouldn't be surprised if it's 25 % of us that have been affected by the current climate. Either directly being ourselves or our partners.

Times are sh!t.

Luckily we have a little put aside, but that was funding the purchase of a bigger house, not to 'survive'.
